EL CAJON, Calif. --- Biola Tennis made the trip out to San Diego Christian on Saturday morning not knowing whether or not it would be able to get its matches in because of the rainfall last night and this morning.

That stress, combined with the three-hour wait to actually get the matches underway, created challenging conditions to succeed for the Eagles.

The women's team suffered an 8-1 loss to the undefeated No. 18 Hawks. The men battled tooth and nail and came up just short in an impressive 5-4 loss to the No. 10 San Diego Christian team.

On the women's side it was the No. 3 doubles team of
Tinisee Kandakai and
Allison Torres that scored the lone match win for the Eagles. They defeated their opponents in a grueling 9-7 match to improve to 2-0 together this year.

Torres came the closest to winning a match in singles. She won the first set 6-0 to get off to a great start, but then had a setback in a 6-4 second set. Since the match was already settled it was not a third set they played, but rather a tiebreaker and she lost 10-7. It was a solid display of endurance from the freshman playing in just her first singles match of the year.

The men's match was where the majority of the drama was on this day. It was an incredible back-and-forth battle between two teams that are sure to compete at the top of the Golden State Athletic Conference standings.

Half of the singles matches either took three sets or had at least one set that had to be settled with a tiebreaker. The Eagles got wins at No. 4 (
Derek James) and No. 6 (
Joe Turnquist). Both of those matches were settled in straight sets as James won his matchup 6-2; 6-1 and Turnquist held the upper hand in his with 6-1; 6-3 victories.

David Garcia forced his opponent into a third set in what turned out to be the most pivotal result in the whole match. He dropped set one 6-4 before rallying to win the second decisively at 6-2 and extend the match.

The third set was as closely matched as they could get. Fabian Daniel eventually earned the victory at 7-6, which is what turned out to clinch the match for SDC. It was a great effort from Garcia as he was playing up one spot in the lineup and was facing a man who had a top-50 regional ranking all throughout his high school career.

Biola had another chance to win the match in doubles, but it would've had to win all three matchups in order to do so. The team came just about as close as it could to doing so as
Lucas Lee and
Luke Mountain won at No. 1, 9-7, and James and Turnquist won 8-6 at No. 3. The Eagles fell just short in the No. 2 position, suffering an 8-6 loss.

Biola's women fell to 2-3 (1-1 GSAC) with the loss. The men dropped to 1-1 (1-1 GSAC). Both teams are back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Irvine to face future PacWest foe, Concordia-Irvine.
