Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Softball increased its winning streak to three games on Friday afternoon as the Eagles worked a dominant doubleheader sweep of Lewis & Clark College at Eagles Diamond.
Â
Riding a stellar start from
Selina Sherlin and great relief work from
Paula Damas Biola won the first game 4-1 in one of two fantastic pitching performances on this day.
Â
Kimmy Triolo started game two and was relieved by
Kaile Chavez as the team once again held the visiting Pioneers to just one run in a wild 8-1 win. The 14 innings of great pitching lowered the team's staff earned run average to 2.49 and was a big reason for the two additional victories.
Â
The offense was just as good on Friday though as Biola combined for 21 hits over the course of the two contests, including six extra-base hits. The Eagles increased their team batting average from .261 to .290 with the hot bats today.
Â
The hottest bat of all belonged to
Kayla Neff. The freshman played a bit of catcher, a bit of third base and served as designated player for a while as she ended the doubleheader 4-for-7 with three doubles, four RBI and a run scored.
Â
A lot of batters had good days at the dish as
Andi Hormel,
Hailey Boyett, Triolo and
Maranda Galindo each had multi-hit games in game two and Jay Perex had two hits of her own as a pinch hitter in the opener.
Â
Twelve runs combined is the most runs the Eagles have scored in a doubleheader since back on March 23 of last year when they scored 13 runs in one game against Hamline.
Â
Neff's big performance today boosted her season batting average all the way up to .438. Another freshman, Perez, also ratcheted her average above .400 too at .421. The injection of youth into this Biola lineup has been paying dividends in spades so far this year with Damas and sophomore
Hailey Boyett each also hitting over .400.
Â
Both starting pitching performances today were admirable, and both starting pitchers earned the win. Sherlin went five innings and allowed just one run on three hits and a single walk. She was beating the batters in many different ways, earning her 15 outs almost half by groundouts and half by fly outs.
Â
Just before she was lifted for Damas heading into the sixth, Biola's offense clicked into gear in the bottom of the fifth to break a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs and put the team in position for that win.
Â
Triolo went four innings in game two. She was taken out a bit earlier than usual because she already pitched more than a full game on Tuesday and is likely to be called upon for a bunch of innings tomorrow. She was dominant in those four innings, striking out three and also only allowing three hits and one run.
Â
Biola never trailed in either game and is feeling positive about the outlook of the rest of this season now that it's lifted its overall record to 4-3-1 and has the prospects of facing an Antelope Valley team tomorrow that it has a 9-3 all-time record against.
Â
The Eagles and Pioneers (0-6) are scheduled to play two games up in Lancaster beginning at noon.Â
