Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Big Second Half Not Quite Enough

Biola will continue its search for a PacWest win after finishing five points shy at CUI.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola and Concordia may both be Eagles, but the two men's basketball teams entered into Saturday evening's contest in Irvine with very different stories so far this conference season.

Biola suffered two losses on the road in Hawaii and the newly ranked No. 22 Concordia team came into play flying high with two Hawaii wins to open 2017-18 PacWest season.

All that aside, Biola gave the green and gold Eagles everything they could handle on Saturday before ultimately coming up just shy in a 75-70 loss. Biola trailed by as much as 19 in the first half, but 58 percent shooting in the second half, including 4-of-5 from distance, helped BU bring it back within five late in the game.

Twenty seven of Concordia's 75 points came from off the bench, including 21 combined from Cameron English and Tyler Lacour-Brown. All but two of those bench points came in the first half and are a big reason CUI was able to escape with the win.

Biola outscored the host team 39-27 over the final 20 minutes as they tried to work the kind of comeback they watched from the women's team earlier in the day. At the end of the day it was just a bit too late. BU brought the game back within five points with 90 seconds still on the clock, but that's as close as it would get.

It was a Blake Shannon, Jr. triple that cut the lead down to five. That capped off a run of seven consecutive points for Biola.

Levi Auble poured in 14 points in the second half as the junior went 5-of-7 from the field and 4-of-7 from the free throw line over the final 20 minutes to account for most of his 18 points in the game.

Isaiah Jones also had 18 points to tie for the team lead. The freshman scored 10 in the second half and was 9-of-11 overall from the floor. He also brought down nine rebounds to finish just one board shy of what would've been his second double-double of the season.

Concordia shot 66 percent from the field in the first half and score 10 more points in the paint than BU could manage and that was just enough to give the Eagles of Irvine the slim victory.

Biola fell to even at 5-5 (0-3 PacWest) while the hosts improved to 9-3 (3-1 PacWest). Biola continues the search for its first conference win with its next game at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday Dec. 16 at home against Fresno Pacific.
