Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sunbirds Steal One

Biola suffers an upset loss to Fresno Pacific, 85-71.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The pesky Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific spoiled Biola Men's Basketball's PacWest Conference home opener on Saturday evening with an 85-71 victory that keeps BU still on the hunt for its first conference win.

The three-point shot was once again a great weapon for the Eagles' opponent as the Sunbirds dropped in 11 of their 25 attempts, including making seven in the first half to establish themselves well in the driver's seat from the start.

FPU established a double-digit lead (17-7) within the first eight minutes of play to keep the Eagles' defense on its heels and offense forcing things a bit too much. The Eagles faced a 44-35 deficit at the halftime break, cutting the lead down spurred by a sequence of six-straight points with just about eight minutes left.

The second half was closer than the first as Biola managed to make 46 percent of its shots in the final 20 minutes. It was still a 41-36 advantage for the visitors though as BU was only able to hit on two of its three-point attempts in the second half.

FPU never trailed in the game and outrebounded Biola 36-27 to earn its second conference victory of the year. Biola falls to 0-4 and plays host to the vaunted California Baptist Lancers on Monday.

It was the seventh time in 11 games that BU was able to get over the 70-point threshold on offense. Unfortunately, it's the second-consecutive time the team's gone over the 70-point mark and suffered a loss.

The Eagles' scoring was paced by Trevor Treinen's 16 points. The junior was 5-of-12 from the floor, but uncharacteristically cold from three-point range, going 1-of-5. Levi Auble (13), Blake Shannon, Jr. (12) and Michael Bagatourian (11) each went for double-digits too.

It was Christian Carroll who was the most efficient for Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist, though. The junior transfer went 3-of-4 from the field with eight points, two rebounds and added an assist in just over 20 minutes on the floor.

Biola falls to 5-6 overall following its fourth loss in a row. The Eagles host CBU at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 18. The Lancers come in at 8-2 overall with a 2-1 mark in PacWest play. They beat Dixie State 93-82 Saturday night.
