Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Early Struggles SInk BU

Biola cannot get its offense off the ground in the first half and suffers loss.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Preseason favorites California Baptist University came into Chase Gym on Monday night for the Eagles' final homestand before the Christmas break. The Lancers dominated the first half, but BU held its own in the second half before the game ultimately swung in favor of CBU, 80-63.

The Lancers held the Eagles to just 19 points in the first half and shot 54 percent from the floor to build a sizeable 41-19 lead. The Eagles came out of the gates strong in the second 20 minutes and managed to play sound defense and shoot well to double their first-half output and outscore the victors 44-39 in the final 20.

Michael Bagatourian was a big reason for the Eagles' second-half turnaround. The freshman piled in 13 points in the half on 5-of-7 shooting. Levi Auble and Trevor Treinen also contributed as expected over the final 20 minutes with 12 and 11 points, respectively. It was a good bounce back from Auble who was held to just one point in the first half.

For the second game in a row Biola was victimized by three-point shooting. The Lancers used this as a big weapon in the first half (six makes), but the Eagles closed them out a bit more in half two, only allowing the visitors to shoot 3-of-11 from deep.

Biola shot 58 percent in the second half, with all three of the guys mentioned above going 5-of-7. CBU ended up having two guys score over 18, including the game's leading scorer Jordan Heading (21). The other was the Lancers' center Kalidou Diouf, who went for 18 points and 14 boards to secure the game's only double-double.

A big reason the Eagles ended up with their fifth-consecutive conference loss was the rebounding margin. CBU brought down 40 boards and held the Eagles to 27. Just eight of the Lancers' rebounds were on the offensive end, but they made the most of those, getting 12 second-chance points.

Both teams handled the ball well with just 19 total turnovers in the game. CBU was able to move it around a bit better though, equating in 15 assists compared to BU's nine.

Four Eagles ended up in double-digits, led by Treinen's 16. It was the junior's 10th game in a row going over 10 on the offensive end. The others were Bagatourian (15), Auble (13) and Blake Shannon, Jr. with 11. It was the sixth double-digit scoring effort from Bagatourian this season and second straight.

After those four the Eagles only got eight other points, including just four off the bench. CBU had 27 bench points, which is the most BU has allowed to an opponent's bench during this conference season.

The loss drops Biola to 5-7 overall and 0-5 in PacWest play. The Lancers are now 9-2 overall and 3-1 in PacWest competition. The Eagles will have 11 days off and then return home for a non-conference battle with West Coast Baptist in the afternoon on Dec. 30.
