Eagles Withstand Mustangs Late Rush

Biola’s starters score 63 total points in 74-63 win over the Mustangs.

Guard Tatum Brimley scored a game-high 20 points in Biola's 74-63 win over The Master's.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- There could not have been better timing for Biola to play its best game of the season. Despite a 29 point showing from the Mustangs in the fourth, the Eagles held a double-digit lead for nearly three straight quarters and defeated No. 17 The Master's 74-63 to improve to 2-0 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.

Biola's starters collected a total of 63 points compared to the 33 produced by The Master's starting five and the Eagles defense forced more than 20 turnovers for the third straight game. The Eagles have now won six straight overall and the last seven at home.

"We all knew this was a big game for us and the whole team did a great job stepping up," said sophomore forward Sara Dougan. "We were really active and hungry on defense, but stayed disciplined at the same time."

Dougan scored 13 points on Tuesday and reached double-figures for the third time this season. Dougan also joined forces with Joclyn Kirton and Jessica Shill to stifle the efforts of the Mustangs NAIA All-American forward Bianca Cubello.

After posting 12 points and 17 rebounds in The Master's most recent win, Cubello was held to just two points in the first half on two free throws. The Mustang forward finished with 10 points and nine boards on 3-of-7 shooting.

Biola started of the game hot thanks to a hot shooter. DeMoria White went 3-for-3 to begin the game, giving the Eagles a 7-0 advantage that they would hold until the Mustangs got their first points at the five minute mark.

Biola's 12 point lead after the first expanded to 18 at the half largely because of great shooting from the duo of White and Annie Park. Both guards finished the first half with 10 points and combined to shoot 7-of-8 from the field while the Master's scored 19 point total.

When the second half started, Tatum Brimley began lighting it up from beyond the arc and made an imprint in her first start this season by scoring 11 consecutive points for Biola to start the third period.

"I'm really proud that Tatum's extra work in practice paid off for her in the game tonight," said Dougan. "She really picked up the team when we needed to start the second half off strong."

Brimley collected 11 of the Eagles 17 third quarter points and scored 16 points in the final two periods to finish with a game-high 20.

The Master's would not go down without a fight however, as it scored more points with each successive quarter to try and overcome the Eagles assertive defense and 11 steals. In the midst of their 29 point fourth quarter, the Mustangs shaved the deficit down to nine at the 1:55 mark on an Aubrey Bekendam layup.

29 points is the most any opponent has scored in one quarter against the Eagles this season.

Tonight's victory is the first win against a ranked team for Biola this season and will be good preparation for its next game against a ranked opponent on Saturday.

The Eagles travel to Santa Barbara to face No. 4 Westmont at 5:30 p.m.
