Joclyn Is Boss In Win Over San Diego Christian

Kirton’s huge 24 point, 16 rebound double-double leads Biola in 67-53 win.

Joclyn Kirton posted a massive 24 points and 16 rebounds in the Eagles 67-53 win over San Diego Christian
Box Score EL CAJON, Calif. --- Biola overcame a strong press defense from the San Diego Christian Hawks on Saturday, making the necessary halftime adjustments that led to a 67-53 win. Biola scored 26 points in the paint and 39 overall in the second half to earn its fourth Golden State Athletic Conference win of the season.

"We definitely made halftime adjustments since we had a hard time breaking their press; the San Diego Christian players did a great job being aggressive and active the whole game," said assistant coach Grace Ricafranca. "I think we were better poised in the second half and make better decisions about how to bring the ball up the court."

The Hawks three-quarter court pressure led to eight points off of turnovers for the home team in the first two quarters and resulted in a four point lead after the first ten minutes. But over the course of the entire first half, the Eagles ended up with the more efficient offense (.400 percent from the field) and had seven more boards to eek out a two point lead headed into the locker room.

Biola would not relinquish that lead at any point in the final two quarters thanks to the mid-game adjustments the coaching staff devised during the break. With an already impressive showing of eight points and seven rebounds in the first half, forward Joclyn Kirton's position in the low post was the focal point of the second half game plan.

Kirton improved on her stat line with 16 points and nine rebounds in the second half and created the open looks DeMoria White needed to score 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting in quarters three and four. White was the second leading scorer in the game with 20 points.

"In the second half we really emphasized getting the ball to Joc in the low post and playing as a unit to get great shots," said White. "Making good plays helped us to come out on top for the victory and Joc played at a high level to get us buckets and rebounds. I knew she was capable of these types of games."

Mikayla Greens and Annie Park also provided a much needed spark in the first half with eight and nine points, respectively. Greens outscored the San Diego Christian bench all by herself and also contributed eight rebounds.

"Mikayla is getting better as a basketball player and is improving in her decision making every day and with every game," said Ricafranca. "Tonight she settled into the game and into the offensive flow very nicely."

On the defensive side of the floor, the Eagles did a great job of closing on the Hawks midrange and three-point shots. Biola restricted the Hawks to 15 points or less in every quarter and .318 shooting from the field. The Eagles forced 15 turnovers in the game, marking the eighth game in a row where Biola pressures an opponent to commit at least 14 turnovers.

The 13-4 Eagles will play the third road game of their GSAC schedule in Phoenix on Tuesday. The game against Arizona Christian tips off at 4:30 p.m. PT
