Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball has played more five-set matches in 2016 than any other length of match. Saturday afternoon's five-setter against Carroll College marked the Eagles' fifth five-setter and was the third time the Eagles have lost in that clinching fifth set.
Â
Biola recorded easy victories in sets one and four, but blew leads in sets two, three and five to ultimately suffer an agonizing loss at the hands of the unranked Fighting Saints (25-17, 22-25, 25-27, 25-18, 13-15).
Â
"This was a difficult match for us," said Seltzer. "We are definitely better than how we played. We have some girls nursing some things, but this is a match we should find a way to win. I give Carroll credit for finishing it, and I expect us to learn from this and turn it around."
Â
Set three (and of course set five) were the biggest letdowns in the loss as Biola had the lead and was within three points of clinching a win in both sets. The third set was the turning point of the match as Carroll eeked out a 27-25 win after BU saw a 13-7 lead go by the wayside because of a bunch of errors.
Â
The Eagles committed 10 attack errors and two service errors while Carroll kept its mistakes to a minimum with just one error as it recorded its best attack percentage of the whole match en route to its shocking come-from-behind victory. The Saints also picked up three blocks in the third set, which mad just enough difference to allow them to win by two points.
Â
After that the Eagles were fighting an uphill battle for the final two sets. They managed to return to form in a powerful fourth set win, but reverted back to making some costly mistakes in a fifth set that was fairly evenly matched.
Â
The Eagles staked claim on a 12-11 lead late in the fifth set after winning five of seven points in the middle of the frame. However, after that point BU could manage just one more point and gave away two (service error, double) as it suffered its fifth loss of the season.
Â
Hannah van Warmerdam and
Karly Dantuma were the biggest bright spots on an otherwise inconsistent Biola attack. Dantuma finished with 15 kills on just 28 swings and hit .429, while van Warmerdam posted a team-high 19 kills on 42 swings with a percentage of .381.
Tess Van Grouw also did all she could to keep the Eagles in the match as the junior libero ended with 34 digs. It's her second time eclipsing 30 in her career. Her career-best is 39, and it came in a five-set loss to Grand View last weekend.
Â
Biola falls to 7-5 on the year while Carroll improves to 10-2 overall. The Eagles will have a chance to rebound at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday as their week (and preseason) concludes with a match against UC Merced (2-6).
