Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After a tough week on the road Biola Volleyball jumped at its opportunity to be back inside of Chase Gym and earned another three set win. The Eagles won their fifth conference match of the season with a sweep (25-19, 25-21, 25-21) of the San Diego Christian Hawks.
The Hawks, despite having not won a set over the Eagles in over 12 years, fought hard from start-to-finish and had Biola actually looking like it was on the ropes for some parts of the games, but ultimately the Eagles found a way to get it done in all three sets.
The play of the Eagles' outsides had a whole lot to do with tonight's success, spearheaded by a super effort from freshman
Alyx Dunham. It seemed like Dunham just could not miss at all throughout the night as she ended with a team-high 18 kills and only had one error. On top of that she was in on one quarter of the Eagles' blocks.
" Everybody in their career has one match like this, and Alyx just had hers," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer. "Everybody has a match where there was a lot of good. Tonight, she hit well, she blocked well and everything went her way.
Hannah van Warmerdam was back to her old ways of crushing the ball all over the gym. She was not too far behind Dunham as she ended with 16 kills on 27 swings and was reigning terror from the left side.
Brinley Beresford and
Tori Moons shared the setting load just about evenly this evening and each ended with over 20 assists. They were key in the Eagles' ability to overcome some early disadvantages in sets as they began to make critical decisions on which attacker to find.
The Eagles hit .292 as a team and led in every important statistical category besides blocks. It was some of that blocking disadvantage that led to BU having to weasel out of a 19-18 deficit in the first, 19-16 deficit in the second and 17-16 deficit in the third.
Also critical to the Biola comebacks was the play of the team's defenders. Whether it was diving digs or perfectly placed passes the back row was on point all night long.
Tess Van Grouw led the effort with 15 digs.
"I told everybody at the end of the game when we were talking that the MVPs of this season have been our three-headed defensive team spearheaded by Tess," said Seltzer.
Seltzer was of course referring to Van Grouw,
Anna Houser and
Kaitlin O'Brien, who have combined for 698 digs this season, helping the Eagles rank in the top 30 percent in the NAIA in total digs.
Biola improves to 14-7 overall and 5-2 in Golden State Athletic Conference play. The Hawks fall to 8-10 (1-5 GSAC). Biola is back at home this coming Tuesday (Oct. 4) for a match against traditional rival, Vanguard.
