Biola Finds its Scoring Form Again

Biola makes crucial adjustments headed into the second half to score four goals in shutout win.

Mariah Ziemer scores her first goal of the season to give Biola a 4-0 over The Master's Mustangs
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After a first half that witnessed four offside whistles for the Eagles and a large number of missed passing connections, Biola turned a corner in the second half to take a 4-0 win over The Master's Mustangs. The four goal second half marks the largest number of goals the Eagles have scored in a match this season and resulted in a win that vaulted them into second place on the Golden State Athletic Conference table.

The first half was largely a struggle in the midfield trenches, with Biola finding it difficult to advance the ball into the attacking third against a conference opponent for the second consecutive match. But Biola did produce some chances in the first 45 minutes, with the most promising try coming on a slip up from the Master's defense that allowed both Taylor Venegas and Sam Verduzco to swarm after a free ball.

After Venegas' attempt glanced off a retreating Mustang defender, Verduzco made two efforts to clean up the loose ball. Unfortunately for Biola, the first shot was punched away by the Master's keeper and bounced up just enough so Verduzco's second strike sailed high instead of straight into the net.

Master's could not get much going either as the Biola defense displayed their resolve again. The Mustang's were limited to four shots on goal during the first half, all from outside the penalty area and all routine saves for the dependable Christina Rodriguez. With no offensive activity occurring in the last six minutes of the first half, Biola regathered itself during the 15 minute break and found the scoring form it had the first seven matches of the season.

"We discussed a few things at halftime to try to capitalize on the space Master's was giving us and the ladies did well making those adjustments," said Head Coach Erin Brunelle. "We got back to scoring different types of goals tonight off of set pieces and services into the box."

The initial beneficiary of the halftime adjustments was senior captain Jessie Burns, who scored two more goals tonight to put Biola up 2-0. The forwards goals would come 11 minutes apart and give her a total of six on the season, which ties the highest season total she had over her three previous years as an Eagle.

It was another case of Burns finding herself in the right place at the right time. Her first goal came in the 62nd minute after a McKenna Marmelstein throw-in was fought over in the box and spit out of the scrum right in front of Burns' feet. Burns second goal came on the conversion of a penalty kick awarded after a Master's handball in the box. It was the second time in as many games that Burns took the opportunity presented to her to score from the penalty spot.

"Jessie has been on a bit of a hot streak recently with a few goals in the last two games," said Brunelle." But all our forwards did tremendous work tonight to cover a lot of ground defensively and then try to race up the field to attack."

The work of players like Paula-Marie Labate, Margaret Guadarrama and the aforementioned Venegas and Verduzco sucked The Master's defense in tight and was the push in the tide of the game that resulted in the Eagles next two goals from midfielders McKenna Marmelstein and Mariah Ziemer. Ziemer's work near the end of the match is particularly notable, as the senior got her third assist (on Mermelstein's score) and first goal of the season within a span of 80 seconds.

After Westmont lost 0-1 in overtime to Vanguard earlier Tuesday night, the Eagles have sole possession of second place in the conference and have the opportunity to rise one more spot should they beat Vanguard at home on Saturday. The match against the Lions begins at 4:30 p.m.
