Warriors Block A Biola Upset

Biola Volleyball suffered a 3-0 loss in Santa Barbara as Westmont continued its dream season.

Box Score SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- When No. 3 Westmont came down to La Mirada to play at the 2016 Red Lion-Biola Volleyball Summer Slam we could tell they were really, really good.

On Saturday night in Santa Barbara that fact was further cemented as the Eagles suffered a straight-set loss to the Warriors (21-25, 20-25, 22-25) to drop its second Golden State Athletic Conference match in a row.

The Warriors stormed out to a 21-12 lead in the first set and looked like absolute world-beaters early on. However, the Eagles won nine of the final 13 points of the set to tighten things up. That resilience would carry throughout the match as BU held close to the Warriors in every single set.

Biola's momentum kept the late momentum from the first set running through the beginning of the second as some fantastic team volleyball helped the Eagles storm to an 11-8 lead. The set was thrown off kilter when the Warriors got on a hot streak and won seven points in a row and nine of the next 10.

Westmont jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third, but the Eagles managed a few runs of their own to get the game all the way back to 18-18 and for just a moment looked like they may be able to keep the match going into a fourth set.

A service ace, Ally Forsberg kill and Westmont service error set Biola up with a 21-20 lead and had them as close as they'd been all night to a set victory. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse as the Warriors rattled off five of six points to end the match early. Biola committed two service errors in those final six points to lose control of the clinching set.

The serve was not as solid as it normally is for Head Coach Aaron Seltzer's side as all night long the team struggled to challenge the Westmont defenders. BU committed nine total service errors and could only land four aces.

The Eagles did well in serve-receive though, as they held Westmont to just two total service aces against them. Westmont had averaged well over five aces-per-match coming into play.

Biola hit just .075 as a team as it ran up against a Westmont front row that put up block after block after block on this Saturday night. The Warriors finished with 13 blocks in the three sets. That 13-block number is the most the Eagles have allowed in any match this season (even in their six five-set matches).

The Warriors' undefeated season continues as they improve to 17-0 (6-0 GSAC). Biola falls to 13-7 (4-2 GSAC). The Eagles will gladly return home next week as the team's next match is Thursday night as it hosts San Diego Christian at 7:00 pm. It is the first of five home matches in a row.
