Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. --- After a slow start in the first set No. 19 Biola Volleyball returned to form in a big way as it worked a 3-1 (19-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-16) victory over Lewis-Clark State College during its second match at the 2016 Hope International Labor Day Classic.
"Everybody bounced back really well after a hard morning match," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer. "Defensively, everyone did really, really well as we got back to playing some really good volleyball."
The Eagles fell behind early as a poor offensive game in the first set helped unranked Lewis-Clark State work a 25-19 win and move ahead in the match.
All of those problems were rectified in set number two as Biola posted one of its best hitting percentages of the season at .586. Biola dominated the set as they had six more kills than the Warriors could muster (17) and went the entire set without an attacking error.
Stephanie Jewett had a very strong stretch at the beginning of the second set as she helped the Eagles build a 10-3 early lead. She had four kills in her first four swings of the set to help BU roar back from the early disappointment. She would end the match with eight kills.
The third set followed much of the same script as Biola cruised to a 25-19 win to earn the 2-1 advantage in the match. This time it was the Eagles' defense that truly shined as Biola help the hard-hitting Warriors to a hitting percentage in the negative (-.029) and just eight kills in the set.
Biola had just five blocks in the match but managed 59 digs on LCSC's 134 attack attempts.
Tess Van Grouw and
Tori Moons stole the show with their work in the back row. Van Grouw had 18 digs and Moons finished with 13 while adding 15 assists to round out her ledger.
"Our setters played fantastic on defense and really made a difference in this win," said Seltzer. "Also, both Karly and Stephanie played great on the right side, which really helped us out."
With the match seemingly firmly in grasp the Eagles played free and easy in the fourth set as they locked down their seventh victory of the young season with a 25-16 win. Biola hit .345 in the clinching set to mark its third set above .300 in the match. The Eagles hit .279 in the match with efficient performances from
Karly Dantuma (.385 – 13 kills),
Ally Forsberg (.429 – 7 kills) and van Warmerdam (.375 – 13 kills) leading the way.
"It's good to get two wins, but we still see areas we can improve. We're looking forward to getting back after it tomorrow," said Seltzer.
This match should've seemed like a nice rest for the Eagles as it was the team's first match of fewer than five sets in its last four outings. Biola goes 2-0 on the first day of the tournament and improves to 7-4 overall. The Eagles head back to Darling Pavilion on Saturday for matches against Carroll College (12 p.m.) and UC Merced (4:00 p.m.)
