Multiple Mini Comebacks Key Opening Win

Biola barely escapes a loss by wiggling out of a few deficits in a five-set win over La Sierra.

Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. --- Wins are always great. Wins are not always pretty. That second statement was true of the No. 19 Biola Eagles' slim five-set (25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 23-25, 15-12) win over La Sierra on Friday morning.

Biola overcame early deficits in both the first and second sets to claim set victories that proved to be critical as the match rolled along. The real moment of the match was an 11-point stretch in the middle of the second set that turned a bleak 13-6 deficit into a 17-13 advantage.

"Sometimes finding a way to win without having your best stuff is all you can do," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "La Sierra did a great job serving today and kept us off balance all match long."

That spot-on serving helped La Sierra hold the Eagles at arms length for much of the third and fourth sets as it came from behind to tie the match and force a fifth set. It was Biola's third five-set match in a row and fifth through the first 10 matches of the year.

Both teams attacked well in a well-contested fifth set, but the Eagles turned their attack precision up a notch in the middle and end of the set to find away to work the 15-12 win. It was another magnificent escape, as BU was again able to overcome a long stretch of consecutive LSU points that gave the Golden Eagles a large early lead.

Biola went down 5-2 but responded a little later in the set with its own 5-point streak to tip the scales in a more favorable direction and ultimately earn the win.

Biola's outside hitters were critical late in the match as kills from Stephanie Jewett, Alyx Dunham and Karly Dantuma accounted for five of Biola's game-clinching points at the end of the match.

Dantuma, Brooke Watts and Hannah van Warmerdam led the offensive onslaught from the outside throughout the match. The trio each hit double-digits in kills and hit well over .100, over .200 or over .300.

Despite some struggles here and there throughout the match Biola managed to accumulate 22 more kills as a team than La Sierra did. However, the match was closer than expected because of the Eagles committing 11 more attacking errors than the Golden Eagles.

The win helps Biola improve to 6-4 on the season. They face Lewis-Clark State College at 4:00 p.m. as their second match of the 2016 Hope International Labor Day Classic. Follow the game live at portal.stretchinternet.com/biola
