Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It had been 10 years since Biola Volleyball and Chapman Volleyball went head-to-head, so there was a whole lot of unknowns coming into Tuesday night's matchup.
There were zero unknowns once the match was finished and the No. 15 Eagles had cruised to another three-set victory (25-22, 25-18, 25-22) in their first time back on their home floor in almost a month.
"It was great tonight to just get a little different look," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer. "Karly was really active tonight and Alyx looked a lot more comfortable and confident and played great."
Biola had to play the match with the NCAA substitution rules (15 per set vs. unlimited), which forced Seltzer to shift into a 5-1 rotation instead of his customary 6-2.
His team thrived in the new system and managed to hit .227 as a team with very limited ball handling mistakes throughout the night.
Brinley Beresford excelled in the added playing time as she accumulated 32 assists and even managed three kills by utilizing a dangerous setter's dump.
Her favorite target to set throughout the match was sophomore outside hitter
Karly Dantuma. Dantuma was absolutely on fire from start to finish, which we've all become accustomed to, and ended the night with 19 kills in just the three sets. She hit .333 and even added three service aces, which happened to come on back-to-back-to-back.
Alyx Dunham was another big swinger for the Biola offense. Her best set of the night came in the Eagles' set one victory. She landed five kills on just six swings. She would end the match with seven total kills and a .190 attack percentage.
Outside of a first set that saw the Panthers accumulate 13 kills and hit .312, the visiting team really could not find an effective flow on its side of the net. Part of their problem was the Eagles' relentless back row that worked well to shut them down.
Tess Van Grouw,
Anna Houser and
Kaitlin O'Brien were up to their usual awesome play and it really helped Biola be able to shut things down in straight sets.
"I thought it was a good team effort," said Seltzer. "Everyone played well and the bench had some good energy."
Seltzer played with just 11 players, and only nine of those 11 played in all three sets, as he attempted to get some of his regulars some rest and recovery as they prepare for the continuation of Golden State Athletic Conference play later this week.
Biola Volleyball improves to 11-5 on the season, including a 5-2 home record. Chapman's season began a bit later than Biola's and the Panthers have just a 4-2 mark. The Eagles have two more home matches this week as they host Menlo at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and William Jessup at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
