Box Score GRAND ISLAND, Neb. --- Grand View Volleyball is having a grand time in Grand Island, Nebraska. The Vikings shocked No. 1 Columbia in the morning on Friday with a three-set win, and then they shocked No. 19 Biola Volleyball with a come-from-behind five-set win in the nightcap.
Biola Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer is not too worried about the final result of the Eagles' second match of the Bill Marshall Volleyball Classic. He recognizes that Biola played well enough to walk away with a win and was ultimately the better team on the floor.
"It was a tough day today," said Seltzer. "But that is the whole reason we came out here. We came out to play a challenging schedule and I know we will get better from this."
The turning point in this night match was the end of the fourth set. Biola won the first set and the third set and had three different match points in the fourth, but could not close out on the Vikings.
Biola had a match point at 24-23, and then it overcame a 25-24 deficit to earn match points at 26-25, 27-26 but the Vikings won back-to-back-to-back points to salvage the set and push BU to five for just the second time this season.
"Congratulations to Grand View for finding a way to push it to five," said Seltzer. "When you do not close out on teams like that you do not win the game."
Similar to the last fifth set this team played, the Eagles fell behind in a big way early on in tonight's fifth set. Biola trailed 3-8 when the two teams switched sides in the middle of the clinching game. Then, a string of points, aided by some tremendous defensive play from
Tess Van Grouw, helped Biola get back within two at 8-10.
Unfortunately, Grand View was able to sideout just well enough late in the set to finish with a 15-12 win and secure its second major upset of the day.
"We played a lot better in this match than we did in our morning match," said Seltzer. "We could have easily built a cupcake schedule, but we chose not to do that, because I know that this is the way our young team can get better."
One of Seltzer's youngest players,
Stephanie Jewett, had a breakthrough performance in this evening's match. The sophomore got her first chance to play a majority of a match in a key attacking position and made the most of it. She finished with nine kills on 19 swings and hit almost .300. She also played all over the floor to get in on five blocks and four digs.
Hannah van Warmerdam once again led Biola in kills with a season-high 21 kills on 49 attack attempts. She was one of three Biola players with 40 or more attack attempts. The other two were
Karly Dantuma and
Brooke Watts.
Biola falls to 4-4 while Grand View improves to 2-0. The Eagles have the tough task of facing a rested No. 1 Columbia Cougars team early in the morning on Saturday. Biola's final match of the Bill Marshall Volleyball Classic begins at 8:00 a.m. PT.
