Mountaineers Reach The Peak Against BU

Biola suffered its first loss of the 2016 season on Thursday as Eastern Oregon claimed 4-set win.

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The sweet taste of Summer Slam success faded away during Biola Volleyball's second match on Thursday. The Eagles went up against a very tough opponent in No. 8 Eastern Oregon and came out on the wrong end of a four-set match (18-25, 18-25, 25-23, 16-25).

The story in this was in fairly simple, and it is just that the Eagles got overpowered by an Eastern Oregon team that had its attack playing at its absolute best. The Mountaineers hit an astounding .386 for the match, while Biola posted a very respectable .167 that was no match for the machine-like hitting precision on the other side of the net.

Biola finished the match with more kills (50 to 47), but piled on 20 more attack errors than EOU, which made a huge difference in the outcome of sets one, two and three.

Set two is what put the emotional nail in the coffin early in the match. The Eagles looked primed to rebound from a disappointing set one loss as they soared out to a 12-5 lead. Unfortunately, the offense started rolling again for the Mountaineers as they won 11 of the next 12 points to flip the script on a critical set. Eventually they'd go on to earn a 25-18 win in that set to secure a 2-0 advantage in the match and set them well on the way to their first win of the season.

Eastern Oregon was playing eight hours after suffering a 3-0 loss to Westmont earlier in the day.

Although weakness at the net (only one block) and a daunting 15 service errors highlight the negatives on Biola's performance in its first loss of the year there were still some shining moments to point out.

Sierra Bauder had her second phenomenal match of the day. She recorded 13 kills, second only to Hannah van Warmerdam's 14, and hit .478 in an impressive performance in the middle.

Also, Brinley Beresford and Tori Moons had steady performances setting the Eagle attackers. They combined for 42 assists and had just two setting errors in the match.

Biola falls to 2-1 in 2016 and suffers its first home loss since Sept. 20, 2014. The Mountaineers improve to 1-1 and have two more matches at Chase Gym tomorrow.

The Eagles also play two on Friday. They face No. 6 Midland (2-0) at noon and No. 4 Viterbo (2-1) at 6:00 p.m.
