LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis set a new program record for wins in a season on Saturday as it earned a hard fought 5-4 victory over Arizona Christian in the regular season finale.
Â
Biola evened its season record at 11-11 and brought its Golden State Athletic Conference record to 4-5. The match was secured when
Philip Westwood won his third set 7-6 at No. 1 singles in an all-out war against ACU's No. 1 Tyler Cawthorne.
Â
"Today's win was huge for us. It reflects what we've accomplished this whole season," said Head Coach
Brent Worthington. "We finished the season with the first .500 record in program history. It was a total team effort and the boys fought hard today just like all year."
Â
The victory not only secures a .500 finish through the regular season, but it also locks down fourth place in the GSAC. That fourth-place finish sets Biola up as the No. 3 seed in the GSAC Tournament up at Indian Wells later this month.
Â
Westwood's performance was pivotal to the Eagles walking away with the big victory. He improved to 11-10 overall and an astounding 8-5 at the No. 1 singles spot on the year. He dropped the first set 4-6 and then powered through a 6-3 set two win to force the clinching third set. It was as close as could possibly be as he just edged Cawthorne with a 7-6 victory.
Â
"Phil was the clutch man for us. The whole match came down to him and he showed amazing composure and fought hard to win in the breaker," said Worthington. "A match can't get closer than that and Phil showed why he is captain and played 1 in the lineup. I couldn't be more proud of him and the whole team."
Â
The Eagles had the advantage going into the singles competition thanks to wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Lucas Lee (6-3; 6-2) and
David Garcia (7-6; 6-1) joined Westwood with critical wins in singles to ensure the victory.
Â
The women's team joined the men in Arizona and also polished off their 2016 regular season with a match against Arizona Christian. The Firestorm earned a 7-2 victory over the Eagles to drop Biola to 5-15 on the season.
Â
Head Coach
Dee Henry's team guarantees a fifth place finish in the GSAC standings at 3-6 in conference play. They will face Hope International on day one of the GSAC Tournament later this month.
Â
Biola's two match wins came at No. 1 doubles, where
Madeline Heer and
Kelsey Post earned an 8-5 victory over the No. 10 doubles team in the nation, and No. 5 singles where Post earned an unblemished 6-0; 6-0 victory.
Â
The doubles team that Post and Heer managed a win over was the same doubles team that won the USTA/ITA regional tournament at the beginning of the year to secure the title of best doubles team in the western region.
