LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis shook off the sting of back-to-back losses and came away with a dominant 9-0 victory over Pacific Lutheran on Tuesday afternoon at the Biola Tennis Center.
Â
The Eagles took down a confident Lutes group that came into today's matchup with positivity in spades following its own 9-0 victory just 10 days ago (their last match).
Â
Head Coach
Brent Worthington's squad took eight of the nine matches in convincing fashion as the team cruised to its 10
th victory of the season. It is the second season in a row that Worthington has guided the Eagles to double-digit wins. The 10 wins matches last season's win total with still three regular season matches left on the schedule.
Â
"Today was an important win for us. We got back on the winning side of things and tied our win total from last year," said Worthington. "The next two weeks will be the most important of our season so it was good to get a win heading into it to build confidence."
Â
The tone was set early on as the Eagles hosted the Lutes this afternoon. The team worked 8-3, 8-1 and 8-1 wins to open the day with a sound 3-0 advantage after doubles play.
Michael Vartuli and
David Garcia paired well at No. 3 doubles to be the first team off the court with a strong 8-1 victory. The doubles win puts Vartuli and Garcia within shouting distance of a .500 record together this season at 7-8.
Â
The other two pairs that competed for Worthington in this one are already over .500 this season. Wins at No. 1 and No. 2 from
Lucas Lee and
Luke Mountain and
Philip Westwood and
Joe Turnquist helped the pairings improve to 9-8 and 10-8, respectively.
Â
Singles was much of the same dominance as Biola worked straight-set victories at No. 1 through No. 5. Westwood and Mountain each pulled their singles records back to .500 with victories at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Coincidentally enough both players earned the biggest victories of the afternoon with a pair or 6-0; 6-0 wins.
Â
Andrew Greenfield gutted out a tiebreaker win at No. 6 to ensure the Eagles would walk off the courts with the 9-0 victory in tow. He split his two full sets (6-4; 0-6) before clinching his fourth win of the season in the tiebreaker.
Â
Biola's record moves to 10-9 overall as it heads into three consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference matchups to end the season. The stretch begins with a 10:00 a.m. home match against Lewis-Clark State College on April 1. LCSC is an affiliate member of the GSAC in tennis.
