LA MIRADA, Calif. --- We're not even 10 matches into the 2016 season, but with Tuesday afternoon's victories Biola men and women's tennis each completed the season sweep of Golden State Athletic Conference foe Hope International.
Â
The men's team earned a 7-2 victory over a HIU team that was one player short of a full lineup, while the women followed that with a dominating 8-1 victory. Both matches were played in the afternoon/early-evening at the Biola Tennis Center.
Â
In the men's victory, which began during the warmest part of the day on this first day of March, was aided by two wins by default because the Royals could not field a player for No. 6 singles or to complete No. 3 doubles. Outside of that the Eagles went 4-1 at singles and 1-1 at doubles.
Â
Lucas Lee earned a straight-set (6-2; 6-4) win at No. 2 singles to extend his personal winning streak to six consecutive matches. Also, he bettered his team-leading 6-2 singles record and 3-1 record in GSAC matches.
Â
The highlight of doubles for the Eagles was a convincing 8-1 victory at No. 2 by
Joe Turnquist and
Philip Westwood. The tandem improved to an even 4-4 on the season. They are the only Biola duo with a .500 record in doubles at this point.
Â
On the women's side it was a match that was never in doubt as Biola swept doubles play and then won four of its five singles wins by way of straight-set victories.
Â
First-year Eagles
Bailey McGeough and
Katie Boesl did a great job of gritting out a 9-8 victory at No. 3 doubles to preserve the 3-0 run through the doubles portion of competition. It was that pairing's fourth time playing together this season, and they improved to 2-2.
Â
Madeline Heer,
Brooke Sanford,
Susan Carmichael and
Kelsey Post each won by way of straight-sets in singles. Then,
Taliah Hightower, another first-year Eagle, staged a comeback after losing the first set of her No. 6 singles match and won by way of a tiebreaker after the match was clinched (4-6; 6-2 (10-3)).
Â
Biola Men's Tennis improves to 4-4 (2-2 GSAC) following the victory. They are back in action at home at 10:00 a.m. against Arizona Christian this Saturday. The women improve to 3-6 (2-2 GSAC) and play again this Friday at 10:00 a.m. when they host Brenau.Â
