Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- When Head Coach
Alan Nakamura's team hosted Menlo College on Saturday afternoon it was determined to not have to repeat the hard-working come-from-behind win it earned up in Atherton earlier this year.
Â
The team quickly ensured it would not need to come from behind as it had high scoring quarters in each of the first 10-minute periods to take a huge lead into halftime. That halftime lead would eventually become a 73-62 victory that broke a four game losing streak.
Â
"I'm very thankful for the win," said Head Coach
Alan Nakamura. "The team played like they practice; with a lot of heart and teamwork. The ball and player movement was crucial against a physical defensive team like Menlo. Our shooting percentages are indicative of the way we shared the ball."
Â
Biola outscored Menlo 19-14 in the first and doubled them up 24-12 in the second quarter in working to a 43-26 lead at the break. The Oaks had tough luck from the field throughout the first half, shooting just 25 percent overall.
Â
On the contrary, shooting was no problem for Nakamura's Eagles who utilized excellent ball movement to find the open shot and knock down 15 of their 32 first-half shots.
Â
Incredibly, nine of those first-half makes came from beyond the three-point line. That performance was led by
Danielle Kennedy's five first-half three-point makes, which was a quick glimpse at what would be a fantastic scoring night for the sophomore guard.
Â
"We did a good job executing our plays and moving the ball," said Kennedy. "We shared the ball and made the extra pass. We set excellent screens and had great movement."
Â
Menlo hit a lot higher percentage of its shots in the final two periods, which, combined with a bit of a Biola scoring drought in the third quarter, helped the Oaks tighten the game just a tad.
Â
"Menlo is athletic and determined, and they hit a lot of key shots," said Nakamura.
Â
Trying to keep pace with Kennedy, Menlo's Vanessa D'Amico made six shots from distance over the final 20 minutes to put up 18 second-half points as Menlo outscored the Eagles by six points in the final two quarters.
Â
Eight points was the closest the game would get in the second half as Biola ran away with its seventh Golden State Athletic Conference win of the season.
Â
Kennedy would end up with a game-high 27 points and made eight of the 13 shots she took on this night.
Taylor Casey (10) and
Aubree Mittel (13) would also score in double-digits for the Eagles. They were also the only two other Eagles to make a three-point shot in this one.
Â
The Eagles had to rely on the strong shooting effiieny on a night when they were not as strong on the boards. They were out-rebounded by nine, but had the advantage by getting called for nine fewer fouls.
Â
The win moves Biola to 14-15 (7-8 GSAC) and drops the Oaks to 11-17 (4-11 GSAC). The Eagles' regular season comes to a close on Saturday, Feb. 27 with a home game against Hope International. The game will also be senior night.
Â
"Im looking forward to a big game next week," said Kennedy.
Â
Biola sits one game ahead of William Jessup and Hope International for fourth place in the conference table.
