Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz. --- Another great effort from Head Coach
Alan Nakamura's team fell by the wayside because of a mysterious inability to perform in the fourth quarter. Nakamura's side was matching Arizona Christian blow for blow in the first three quarters, but blew a lead late in the game in a 60-55 road loss.
Â
It was a defensive battle throughout the first two quarters as both team struggled to make their shots, resulting in a 26-22 halftime score with the Eagles in front thanks to a 13-8 first quarter.
Â
Biola had that halftime lead because of strong rebounding resulting in more possessions for the Eagles' offense. BU pulled down 26 first-half rebounds compared to 17 from the Firestorm.
Taylor Casey led the way in those first two quarters as she worked more than halfway to a double-double with 10 points and six rebounds.
Â
"Taylor exemplifies the grit we are working towards," said Nakamura. "We are playing like a team and we are competing well."
Â
The defensive struggle that was the first two periods disappeared in the third quarter as the teams traded baskets en route to each team scoring 20 points in the quarter.
Â
A
Danielle Kennedy three-point shot had the bench and Biola personnel filled with confidence as the quarter drew to a close and the Eagles held a 46-39 advantage.
Â
However, a buzzer-beater triple from ACU's Jazmin Mays sucked the air right out of the Eagles' sails in a bit of foreshadowing of what the fourth quarter would be like.
Â
Biola missed six field goals and three free throws in an aggravating fourth quarter that saw ACU overtake the lead at the 2:03 mark and never relinquish it. Three of those missed shots and two of those missed rebounds came inside of that final two minutes as Biola scored just two more points in the game.
Â
"I enjoy every game with this team. We work hard and really try. We got looks for everyone, but missed some crucial opportunities," said Casey.
Â
It was another great effort that was just barely not enough against some very, very talented Golden State Athletic Conference teams. Biola's now experienced seven GSAC contests decided by five or fewer points.
Â
Casey was the leading scorer for Biola with her 13 point, 13 rebound effort. Kennedy followed her with 12 points. It was Casey's first double-double of the season.
Â
Biola falls to 13-15 (6-8 GSAC) after its fourth loss in a row. The Eagles are now just a half-game in front of William Jessup for fourth place in the conference.
Â
The team has just two regular season games left. Â Both are played inside of Chase Gymnasium, beginning with Saturday's 2:00 p.m. game against Menlo (11-15, 4-9 GSAC).
