LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Facing an old Golden State Athletic Conference foe was a tough test for Biola's men and women's tennis teams on Tuesday as both sides played well, but not well enough to walk away with victories against NCAA Division II member, Concordia.
Â
Biola Men's Tennis was able to claim two singles matches from the visiting Eagles in a 7-2 loss, while the women's side took the win at No. 2 doubles in an 8-1 defeat.
Â
"Our players fought to the very end," said Women's Head Coach
Dee Henry.
Â
The doubles pairing of
Kathryn Ashford and
Brooke Sanford was the winning combination for coach Henry on this day as the two earned Biola's only match win 8-4 over Kelsey Markle and Taylor Touchstone. In the two seasons since Sanford joined the team that pairing is 4-0 in doubles matches.
Â
On the men's side it was all about competing in singles as the team took two match victories and came just a few tiebreaker points shy of a third win.
Â
David Garcia and
Luke Mountain earned the Eagles' two victories. It was Biola's first two singles match victories of the 2016 season, coming in the team's second match of the year.
Â
"Overall it was another positive match today," said Men's Head Coach
Brent Worthington. "Everyone competed extremely hard in every spot. The confidence was there and we were close to having this match go in a different direction. It is probably the best match we've played against Concordia in quite a few years."
Â
Mountain earned his win by defeating Man Hon Ko in a 10-point tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets. He won the tiebreaker 10-8 to take the match by a score of 6-3; 4-6 (10-8) and improve to 1-1 in singles this year.
Â
Garcia was great from start to finish in the No. 6 spot as he made a straight-set victory look pretty easy against Santiago Sanchez. The Eagles' sophomore from Lancaster earned a 6-0; 6-1 win to also improve to 1-1.
Â
"David was great from start to finish and never let his opponent have a chance in the match. Luke was up and down but stayed tough mentally to win his match in the 10-point tiebreaker," said Worthington.
Â
Biola's women's team drops to 1-2 and the men's team falls to 0-2 after the pair of losses. They both get back into action this Saturday. The men host Occidental College at 2:00 p.m. and the women travel to UC Riverside for an 11:00 a.m. match.
