Box Score ORANDE, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball overcame a challenging second quarter with a phenomenal second half to work a 74-68 win over the Chapman Panthers on the road on Saturday night.
Both teams struggles to knock down shots with regularity early in the game. Biola led 12-10 through one quarter of play, but the teams combined to make just seven field goals through that first 10 minutes.
The Eagles had a hard time controlling the ball in that first quarter too, suffering six turnovers. Fortunately for BU the Panthers could only scratch out two points off of those turnovers because they shot less than 20 percent from the field.
Khadidja Diakite had a big role in the Eagles' early lead as she accounted for half of the team's first quarter points while going 3-of-3 from the field.
Chapman turned things around at the start of the second quarter as the Panthers started the period with a 10-0 run to storm out to a 20-12 lead. Diakite scored Biola's first bucket of the new period halfway into the new quarter and helped the Eagles get back into the game before it got away from them too badly.
Turnovers would continue to plague the Eagles in the second quarter and spoiled some good possessions as they attempted to level the score again after that Panther 10-point run.
Fouls also began to be an issue in the second quarter as the Eagles would end the half with 11 fouls, resulting in 10 points off free throws and added possessions.
Ultimately, the Panthers would outscore Biola 24-14 in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 34-26 lead and a shooting percentage that was much improved on what they were working with after 10 minutes of play.
The third quarter was a complete flip of the script as the Eagles took back the lead with a huge 10 minutes and entered the fourth quarter with a 49-44 lead.
Annie Park took it upon herself to ensure that Head Coach
Alan Nakamura's team got out to a good start coming out of halftime. The senior drew a foul on the first possession and buried both free throws. Then she hit a transition three to tighten the game to 34-31 and begin to make things very interesting.
Joclyn Kirton scored the next six points of the game with two made free throws and an easy pair of layups to help lift Biola to a 37-34 lead after they scored 11 straight to begin the half.
Four of the first five fouls of the new half were called against the home team, which helped the Eagles surge in the way they did to take over the lead.
The third quarter is when Park decided to take over the game on the offensive end. The senior scored more than half of Biola's 23 points and hit two threes in particular that were like daggers to the confidence of the Panthers' team.
Chapman scored the final four points of the third quarter with a late three and one made free throw, which tightened things up just enough to make the fourth quarter really interesting.
The Panthers continued to shoot well to open the fourth and managed to tie the game at 51 within the first few minutes with an open three-point make. The Eagles scored the next bucket to jump back out ahead and then were lifted yet again by
Sara Dougan drawing a Panther offensive foul to earn an extra possession. Diakite would score on the ensuing possession to get BU back out to a 55-51 lead.
Dougan would continue to do good things later on in the fourth when she stepped to the free throw line and made back-to-back attempts from the stripe to extend the lead all the way to eight at 59-51.
That was followed by a Chapman basket and then a strong push to the basket from
DeMoria White that ended up as a three-point play as she completed the and-one and made it 62-53 as Biola finally seized control of the game for good.
The team would ultimately work its way to a 74-68 victory that was a close as 70-68 inside of the final minute. Park stepped up by hitting four free throws in a row in the final seconds once Chapman began fouling intentionally.
Nakamura's Eagles get away with their sixth win of the season to improve to 6-3. Chapman falls to 1-3. Biola is back at it this Tuesday as they travel to Azusa to face future PacWest foe Azusa Pacific at 7:00 p.m.
