Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif.--- Biola seized its first Golden State Athletic Conference win of the season on Saturday and remains undefeated against NAIA opponents with a 64-47 win over the William Jessup Warriors.Â
In response to the Warriors attempts to jump the passing lanes and force turnovers, the Eagles made it their business to make the extra pass and center the offense on the drive and kick; they stuck with what worked to manufacture a 22 point lead by the start of the fourth and finish with four double digit scorers by the end of the game.
"I am very thankful for the humble, unselfish team that we have and the unselfishness really paid dividends today," said Head Coach
Alan Nakamura. "William Jessup is a really well-coached team, so it was crucial for us to pull for each other as a team to come out on top today."
The Eagles channeled their aggressiveness from the opening tip against a resilient and disciplined Warriors squad: noticing very early in the game that the William Jessup defense was leaving
Sara Dougan open and making it a mission to pass to the forward. Dougan would sink her first three point 25 seconds into the game and Biola immediately began breaking down their opponent's defense in the paint.
Dougan was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 2-of-2 from deep in the first quarter to lead all scorers with 10 points. But the Warriors would not be deterred by a single scoring performance.Â
The visitors kept in stride with the Eagles well into the second quarter. Biola three point lead after 10 minutes quickly dissolved two minutes into the second when the Warriors tied the score at 14-14 and then 16-16 on layups by Lily Hagerty and Janelle Luu, respectively.
But then
DeMoria White started to feel it from three point range. The junior guard gave the Eagles a second option to stretch the offense once she made her first three pointer at the 6:35 mark in the second and would make two more triples down the stretch of the first half to extend the Biola lead to 13 at the break.
That run coincided with the Warriors lowest scoring period of the afternoon: William Jessup scored nine points in the second compared to the Eagles 19 and were restricted to four makes on 15 shot attempts. Forward Ashlyn Jones was the only Warrior to sink more than one shot in the first half (4-of-8 for eight points), and William Jessup went 8-for-26 as a team.
"Our defense was really tight whether we played man or zone today," said junior forward
Khadidja Diakite. "The way we came together on that end of the floor like a family really helped out on offense and was a major reason our posts had so much success."
Diakite, along with
Joclyn Kirton, were the other Eagles besides Dougan and White to reach double figures on Saturday. This is the third time Diakite has scored 10 points or more this season and the ninth instance for Kirton.
With the visitors down by 22 at the beginning of the final period, William Jessup found a spark in its bench with production from Hagerty and Luu. The members of the visitor second unit made things very competitive in the final straight away, scoring 15 of the 24 total point from the bench in the final period and creating five steals. Hagerty and Luu finished the game with 12 and seven points, respectively.
Biola's next game will be an exhibition this upcoming Friday at Long Beach State.Â
