White’s 25 Powers Biola to First Win of Season

52 points in the paint lead to a blowout win over Bethesda.

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- In yet another result where the score was not indicative of the way the game played out, Biola earned its first victory of the season on Tuesday by a comfortable margin with a 79-52 win over Bethesda.
As it pertains to execution, the game was not what the Eagles would have drawn up on the whiteboard, giving up 21 turnovers and going 4-for-21 on three pointers. But the 27 point margin of victory is indicative of the players' motivation to correct their mistakes at the next opportunity rather than allowing the mistakes to frustrate them.
It that respect, DeMoria White led Biola's charge to second chances when she turned a corner in the transition from the first to the second quarters. After going 2-for-6 from the field and missing a few layups that would otherwise convert in the opening period, the junior guard made all six of her shots and both of her free throws in the second quarter.
Her 16 points outscored the entire Flames roster in the second period and gave White all the momentum she would need headed into the second half to finish with a game-high 25 points.
While White was filling up the bucket, forward Joclyn Kirton used her work on the block to craft a full stat sheet of her own. The senior put on a rebounding clinic in the first half with four offensive and four defensive rebounds on the way to 11 for the game.
Unfortunately, Kirton's nine points left her one point away from earning her consecutive double-doubles. But she more than made up for the single digit point output by contributing an additional two assists, two steals, and two blocks.
Biola would finish the game with significant leads over the Flames in points off the bench and points in the paint.
Despite having two scores with 11 or more points, Bethesda lost the game because its bench production (five points) wilted in comparison to the 29 points produced by the Eagles second-unit players. By midway through the second half, Biola was able to make complete line changes on the floor, subbing in five players at a time without a major spike in production from their opponents.
Additionally, Biola was able to compensate for its lack of three point shooting by feeding the ball into the key for regular success. The Eagles scored 52 points in the paint and came up with 20 more rebounds than the Flames as five different forward had at least five boards.
Biola returns to action at home at 7 p.m. on Saturday against La Sierra.
