Warriors Work A Sweep

Biola suffers its first GSAC loss since it played at Westmont last month as it falls 3-0 to Westmont.

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball had the chance to rise up and prove they belong among the top teams in the country on Tuesday evening as they hosted No. 1 Westmont.

The Warriors came into the night with an unblemished 27-0 record and a perfect 12-0 record in Golden State Athletic Conference play. Westmont had 11 3-0 wins and one 3-1 win as they've been blasting past their opponents all year long.

Unfortunately for Biola, the Warriors were able to work their 12th 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-14) GSAC win tonight in La Mirada.

The numbers look a bit more askew than the match actually was. The Eagles had a mistake on their starting rotation paperwork before the first set that had the team out of a usual rotation throughout the entire set and caused the uncharacteristic 14-point loss.

That big blow zapped a lot of the energy from the gym and took away much of the home court advantage that was provided early on by a sizable home crowd.

Some of the energy was restored in the second set as Biola managed to keep pace with the Warriors all the way until the final few points and had a chance to grab a lead as late as at 18-19 and 20-22.

Biola showed a ton of fight in the second set as they stormed back against the Warriors after Westmont worked a quick 5-1 lead. Westmont extended that lead to 12-6, but the Eagles scored six of seven points after that to tighten it to a one-point set.

From that point on the No. 1 team managed to do just enough to keep ahead for the remainder of the set. The Warriors won six of the final eight points to lock up the 2-0 lead and really dishearten the home underdogs.

Despite having its back against the wall the Eagles again played Westmont close to start the third set. The team was within two points at the 10-8 point, but the Warriors rattled off six points in a row and 10 of 12 to really begin to lock the set and match down.

Tess Van Grouw was busy all night long as she had to deal with the most dangerous and most diverse attack in all of the GSAC. She ended the night with 13 digs, which led the team by a wide margin.

Even with the defensive effort of Van Grouw Westmont was able to hit .319 for the match and did a great job of limiting any kind of error as it cruised to the victory.

"Tonight was 100 percent my fault," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "I messed the lineup up big-time, which gave us a horrible start and took all of our momentum and excitement away. It's tough when you have everything completely planned out and cannot stick to it at all."

Westmont improves to 28-0 and 13-0 in the conference. The Eagles fall to 19-9 and 10-3 in conference. Tonight was BU's first conference loss since it played at Westmont last month.

Biola will look to shake all recollection of this one as they host Life Pacific (6-15) in a non-conference tilt at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
