Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Just as it began the first round of Golden State Athletic Conference play, Biola Women's Basketball begins round two with a win over San Diego Christian to keep its winning conference record.
Â
Head Coach
Alan Nakamura's team controlled the game from start-to-finish in a display of dominant play from its full roster. From top to bottom the Eagles got great contributions from the whole rotation tonight spearheaded by tons of points coming from
DeMoria White and
Danielle Kennedy.
Â
The Eagles earned a 58-41 win over the Hawks at home on Tuesday night in a game highlighted by the team's stellar defense. The 41 points allowed is the third-lowest the team has allowed in the 23 games this season and the lowest in conference play.
Â
"The keys to the win tonight were our defensive intensity and how we shared the ball with all 5 players," said White. "We have a team full of solid posts, shooters, and slashers. We play great together. We all have each other's best interest at heart. We play hard, and in tough times we rally together and pull through. I'm grateful for all of my teammates!"
Â
White led the way with her game-high 20 points. She went 7-of- 11 from the floor, made two three-point shots and was nearly perfect from the free throw line in another stellar effort. She combined with Kennedy to score 36 points, which was just five less than the total points Biola allowed SDC's roster.
Â
The Eagles forced 20 turnovers from the Hawks, held the rebounding advantage and shot 15 percent better from the floor than SDC in order to cruise to the 17-point lead.
Â
After San Diego Christian scored the first five points of the game, Biola took over the lead with six minutes remaining in the first quarter and never trailed again. The Eagles scored 12 unanswered points over a six-minute stretch to build the lead it would sustain throughout the night.
Â
"San Diego Christian had a good game plan. And they are physical and always compete," said Nakamura. "I was happy to see us finish the game with poise! I never question our team's unity and desire. We have had numerous close finishes and we learned a lot from those experiences. Tonight it was great to our team add a lot of poise to the mix."
Â
In addition to White and Kennedy the Eagles got solid contributions from
Taylor Casey (8pts/10rebs),
Sara Dougan (7pts/9rebs/3blk),
Joclyn Kirton (4pts/4rbs) and
Makayla Lancaster (3pts/3asst).
Lancaster's three points came on a three-point and-one play late in the second half that sparked the entire team to finish the game strong. She also added a rebound and steal in a complete performance off the bench.
Â
"At crunch time MJ's contribution was huge," said White. "She stepped up big for us on defense with a key steal, active hands, and a clutch "and 1" play. Her intensity and composure with the ball at the point guard position was great. She handled that well."
Â
The Eagles improve to 12-11 (5-4 GSAC) with their second-straight GSAC victory. The team is back at it next Tuesday when it hosts William Jessup. Biola lost to William Jessup, 49-51, in Rocklin two weeks ago.
Â
"This team is a blessing to be a part of," said Nakamura. "I am excited to see how we compete in the second round of the GSAC. Every game will be a big challenge!"
