Box Score ROCKLIN, Calif. --- For the second time in as many outings Biola Women's Basketball ends a Golden State Athletic Conference matchup in agony after a late lead slips away in a devastating two-point loss.
Â
This time out the Eagles built up to a 10-point lead late in the third quarter before a surging fourth quarter led the host team, William Jessup, to a 51-49 victory.
Â
Biola held a 39-29 lead with 2:20 to play in the third quarter of a low scoring game before the Warriors went on a 12-point run into the fourth quarter to claim its first lead since the 6:16 mark in the first quarter.
Â
The Eagles took back the lead with some solid inside scoring and a pair of made free throws in the middle of the fourth before experiencing another lengthy scoring shortage to end the game.
Â
Biola held a 49-46 lead with three minutes to play, but WJU scored each of the final five points of the game to wrap up the win with a layup with 11 seconds left on the clock.
Â
Diana Corona scored the final basket of the evening, which was fitting as she was Jessup's best player throughout the night. She ended with 10 points, nine rebounds and a pair of big blocks.
Â
DeMoria White was again the Eagles' leading scorer. She ended with 24 points and four steals in this rare Thursday night game.
Sara Dougan added another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The pair combined to go 9-of-10 from the free throw line to pad their stat line.
"We had a good team effort and played well in spurts. We are still working on starting and finishing well," said Head Coach
Alan Nakamura. "
Sara Dougan continues to make plays in the middle. And Makayla, Joclyn, and Tina, came off the bench and made solid contributions."
Â
What did the Eagles in was a poor shooting performance through the final two quarters. Biola shot 38 percent from the floor and 32 percent from three in the first half before seeing both numbers drop to 22 percent and 8 percent in half two.
Â
It was a tough night overall on offense for BU as only five players scored points throughout the game. Joining Dougan and White were
Danielle Kennedy (7),
Joclyn Kirton (5) and
Tina Esbenshade (3).
"We have high character ladies on our team. We'll see how much we can learn and apply for our next challenge," said Nakamura.
Â
So the loss pushes Biola to 9-10 (2-3 GSAC) and helps William Jessup improve to 12-4 (3-2 GSAC). The Eagles stay on the road for another GSAC matchup this Saturday afternoon against Menlo.
