Box Score SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- When you're hot, you're hot, especially when you play a team that is not. That is exactly what happened when undefeated No. 2 Biola Volleyball ran into winless CSU San Marcos on Saturday morning to conclude its play at the 2015 The Master's College Labor Day Tournament.
The Eagles piled on against a Cougars team that struggled to finish their attacks from start to finish and ended up with its fourth three-set victory in a row (25-7, 25-15, 25-20).
"It was probably the first match of the year where I think everyone was in really good shape and playing very well," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer. "We were very, very sharp. I think San Marcos was probably the best team we played at this tournament and we definitely played vey well."
Â
CSU San Marcos came into play with an 0-2 mark following two losses to other Golden State Athletic Conference teams, but today's loss must've felt a bit harder on CSUSM, which finished the match with just a -.012 hitting percentage.
Â
The -.012 opponent hitting percentage is the lowest number posted by a Biola opponent since Hope International hit -.090 against the Eagles on Sept. 28, 2013.
Â
Biola dominated the match from start-to-finish as it sped to the victory in exactly one hour and five minutes, tying yesterday's win over Capilano for the quickest finish of the 2015 season.
Â
The third set was CSUSM's best chance to steal one from the Eagles as the two teams both struggled on the attack in the concluding game. The eight attacking errors posted by Biola in that set is tied for the second most in a single set this season.
Â
However, the Cougars also committed eight mistakes in that final set to help Biola escape with its narrow 25-20 victory. The Eagles won the final four points in a row to snuff out a late four-point run by their opponents. Kills by
Alyssa Mason and
Joclyn Kirton and two attacking errors from the other side composed the clinching run.
Â
Biola's middle blockers again stole the show offensively. Mason and
Lauren Hoenecke combined for 38 percent of Biola's kills with their 16. Hoenecke led the team with a .556 attacking effort. Mason was a huge reason for CSUSM's poor attacking effort. She had three solo blocks in the match, part of Biola's 12 team blocks.
Â
Joclyn Kirton led Biola's attack with her 11 kills. She also added the fourth Biola solo block in an all-around effort.
Â
The win maintains the Eagles' undefeated record as it pushes the team to 8-0 during this preseason. CSU San Marcos falls to 0-3 and has one more match left at the tournament as it faces Carroll College Saturday night.
Â
Biola's next match comes at Chase Gym on Friday night. The Eagles host Arizona Christian for their 2015 GSAC season-opener at 7:00 p.m.
