Box Score 2 SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- It is entirely likely that the No. 2 Biola Volleyball team spent more time traveling than it actually spent on the court on Friday as the Eagles won their first two road matches of the year in three sets during day one of The Master's College Labor Day Tournament.
Â
Biola spent just one and a half hours getting by Carroll College (25-19, 25-18, 27-25) in the opener, and then, just an hour later, took only one hour and five minutes to skate past the Blues of Capilano University (25-18, 25-11, 25-18) to improve to 7-0 on the season.
Â
"I thought we got off to a slow start in the first match," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer. "It took us a while to get going, but I really liked our energy in the second match."
Â
The Eagles were simply the better attacking team in the game against Carroll. The Eagles' hitting percentage was just better than the Saints' in two of the three sets, but was enough to get the narrow wins in all three.
Â
Joclyn Kirton again led the attacking effort, finishing with 13 kills. It is her second 13-kill performance in a three-set match this season. Those efforts are the best by any Eagle in a three-set match, save for
Alyssa Mason's effort in today's second match.
Â
The two teams traded points early in the first set before two different runs of three points helped the Eagles widen the gap to a 17-12 margin of which they never looked back on. The second run was powered by Biola's attack, with three kills resulting in the three points, each point coming from a different player in a solid all-around team effort.
Â
Biola jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set before cruising to the 25-18 finishing tally. The third set was the most competitive of the match as the Saints gave the Eagles a scare, needing extra points to seal the match.
Â
Ultimately, on their third match point attempt, a setting error by Carroll got Biola the 27-25 set three win. The Eagles did not have a setting problem as
Ashton Arbuthnot and
Tori Moons were on point throughout. Arbuthnot had 19 assists and Moons added 13 of her own as the tandem set Biola to a .316 cumulative hitting percentage.
Â
The second match was the fastest victory of the season for the Eagles. The previous best took one minute longer and came in Biola's 3-0 win over Oklahoma City.
Â
The Eagles started every set very quickly in this one. They had their struggles in the middle of sets one and three, which allowed the Blues to pull the games closer, but ultimately they finished this one fairly easily.
Â
Alyssa Mason was the star of the second match. Her 14 kills supplanted Kirton's 13 as the most kills for any attacker in a three-set match this year. She was 14-of-18 for the afternoon with just one error, which resulted in a phenomenal .722 hitting percentage.
Â
Ally Forsberg also excelled at middle blocker with
Lauren Hoenecke sitting out the contest. She posted seven kills and also attacked with tremendous efficiency, hitting a team-best .875. She also leads the team in season hitting percentage, which is now at .636.
Â
"Our middles in the second match were spot-on," said Seltzer. "We've been working on getting them up and getting them ready, and Alyssa and Ally were there and were great."
Â
Olivia Sorenson and
Stephanie Jewett also contributed to Biola's attack in game two. The duo added five of the Eagles' 44 kills on a combined 21 attack attempts.
Â
Tess Van Grouw was a big reason why the Eagles out-served the Blues. She had three service aces in this one to help Biola to six aces in the contest. She's up to 10 aces on the season now, which is just three fewer than she had all of last year.
Â
Biola improved to 7-0 with the two victories and has one more match at the TMC Labor Day Tournament. The Eagles go toe-to-toe with CSU San Marcos (0-2) at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
