Sweeping Into Second

Biola finishes the regular season in second place in the GSAC for the second year running.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Biola Softball needed two wins over No. 16 Vanguard to lock in a second place regular season finish in the Golden State Athletic Conference, and they were able to do just that.

The Eagles rode fantastic pitching and just enough timely hitting to get a 1-0 win in game one and 6-3 victory in the second one. The wins put Biola two games in front of the Lions in the final regular season standings and should help them leapfrog Vanguard in the national polls.

Reba DePriest was money all day for Biola, but it was her reliever, Kimmy Triolo, that was the true hero of the first game.

DePriest was in the midst of hurling five shutout innings against the Lions, but she was being matched by Alexandra Olvera in every top half of the inning. However, Triolo came up with a runner on second and one out in the top of the fourth and singled home Bria Madrid for the only run necessary to win the opener.

It was just Triolo's fifth RBI of the season, and her first since March 10th at William Jessup, but it was the biggest of the year to date, as a loss would have lost Biola the second spot in the conference standings.

Triolo took the circle following five innings from DePriest and shut down the Lions over the final two frames, facing just six batters and retiring them all via four ground outs, one strike out and a fly out.

"Kimmy really helped us give Reba some innings off, which is key because we know we're going to have to ride Reba a long way," said Head Coach Lorie Coleman. "It was also great having Kimmy hitting again. That really helped us out, especially with that hit in the first game."

Biola needed a little more offense in the second game, but a new-look lineup helped coach Coleman's squad accomplish that easily.

Coleman inserted Brooke Madrid in the lead-off spot and moved Bria to cleanup. She also put Anjie Amezquita in an RBI spot at ninth in the order. All three moves made Coleman look like a mastermind as they resulted in big offense for the Eagles.

Brooke Madrid scored twice from the lead-off spot and Bria Madrid went 3-for-4 and drove a run in. Amezquita and Brooke both scored on a Kasey Hormel single in the second inning that was technically the game-winning hit, getting the Eagles their third and fourth runs of the game.

"We were just looking for some clutch hits, which really came through today," said Coleman.

Biola built a 4-1 lead through the first two innings of play and seemed poised to clinch the second spot in the conference as DePriest continued to keep the Vanguard hitters off balance in her second game start.

She threw six innings this time, recording seven strikeouts and allowing just three hits to the Lions. Triolo pitched the fifth inning and into the sixth, but did not retire any batters in the sixth before DePriest was brought back in to close things out.

Biola used its four-run second inning and two-run fourth inning to account for all six of its runs. In addition to Bria's three-hit performance, Hormel and Selina Sherlin also had multiple hits in the nightcap.

"This was a big day for us," said Coleman. "This was really good for our confidence going into the tournament."

Biola finishes the regular season 32-16 (16-8 GSAC) and should enter next week's GSAC/CalPac Tournament as the No. 2 seed with a first round bye. Check athletics.biola.edu for more postseason information as it becomes available.
