Biola Bows Out With Loss To Westmont

Biola's Men's Tennis season comes to a close with a 2-5 loss in the GSAC Tournament First Round.

Brandon Chang and Tayven Townsend closed the book on their Biola careers today.

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. --- The most successful season in Biola Men's Tennis history officially came to a close on Wednesday as Biola bowed out of the 2015 GSAC Tournament after a 2-5 first-round loss to No. 13 Westmont.

The match began with doubles, which saw a quick 8-3 victory for Westmont at the No. 1 spot before shortly after David Garcia and Joe Turnquist got an 8-3 win of their own at No. 3.

The middle doubles matchup was a very competitive one, tied 6-6 late into the match before the Warriors ultimately won 8-6. Christian Mathis and Travis Kimsey got the win for WC, while Philip Westwood and Luke Mountain competed for the Eagles. Biola's duo lost to the same pairing just four days ago by an 8-3 margin, so this performance was a big improvement.

Singles was not as competitive for the Eagles and Westmont burst out to a one-set lead in each of the first three singles matches to finish and seemed poised for a 5-1 victory.

However, Garcia had other plans at the No. 6 position. He made quick work of Travis Smelley in a straight-set (6-3; 6-2) win. Garcia beat Smelley in straight sets on Saturday as well.

Luke Mountain got a lead in his match at the No. 4 spot, claiming set one 4-6, but his match remained unfinished as Westmont earned singles victories at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 1 to reach the five-match threshold and complete the competition.

Westmont improved to 10-13 overall and advanced to the next round of the tournament, while Biola fell to 10-14 and ended its season. The 10 victories is the most of any Biola Men's Tennis team to date.

Tayven Townsend and Brandon Chang played in the final official match of their career today. Chang ends his career with 24 singles victories, placing him just three behind David Mossman on the Eagles' all-time wins list. He also had 15 doubles wins, which is top-10 all-time. Townsend recorded 14 singles victories, tying him for sixth-most all-time.

The team competes at the Ojai Tennis Tournament later in April, featuring its players in individual competitions, to conclude its season.
