PASADENA, Calif. --- It was no easy battle, but the Eagles got back into the win column on Friday with a 7-2 win at CalTech. The win snapped a six-match losing streak and came on the back of fantastic individual efforts in singles play, winning two matches via 10-point tiebreak victories.
Â
"This was an important win for us to get back on track for our season," said Head Coach
Brent Worthington. "CalTech has a good tennis team. It was competitive all around, but we just played better and won the match."
Â
The Beavers' only wins came at No 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.
Tayven Townsend gutted out his play all day long, playing with a hand that was not 100 percent. He and
Brandon Chang lost 4-8 at doubles and he was fighting through his singles match until Biola clinched the win.
Â
Phillip Westwood,
Luke Mountain,
Joe Turnquist and
David Garcia all won their singles matches and Mountain, Westwood, Garcia and Turnquist also won their doubles matches.
Â
Garcia and Turnquist won their doubles match 8-0, cruising past the Beavers' No. 3 pairing. They improve to 3-5 this season, all in the No. 3 position.
Â
Mountain and Westwood had a little more challenging route to their doubles win, falling behind 0-3 before storming back for the 8-6 victory. That win put Biola ahead 2-1 heading into singles play.
Â
Three matches into singles
Joe Turnquist clinched the match for the Eagles in the No. 5 spot. He gutted to a 7-6 victory in his first set prior to a 6-3 second-set win.
Â
Biola improves to 4-6 on the season and CalTech falls to 2-4. The Eagles are back in action on Thursday March 12 against Principia College at 2:00 p.m.
