HIGHLIGHTS

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- In a day of extremes, Biola extended its scoreless inning streak to 30 frames with a dominant shutout in game one, and then the two teams exploded for a combined 17 runs in game two as the No. 16 Eagles swept No. 8 CSU San Marcos.

"I knew we were going to sweep them today, because we have been having some good discussions this week and we had a good plan," said Head Coach Lorie Coleman. "I knew that if Reba could get through the first game, which she did quite well, that we could go after the second game and use as many pitchers as we needed to."

Game one was all about Reba DePriest, who managed to shut down a potent CSUSM offense, including Noemi Amu, who is among the top hitters in the country this season. DePriest earned her second complete game shutout in a row and struck out 13 Cougars in the outing.

"We decided we were going to go right at her [Amu] today," said Coleman. "Last time we faced them we did not throw her a single strike, but today we wanted to show we could handle her."

And handle her they did. DePriest held her to just 1-for-4 with three strikeouts in the opener, minimizing her potential for damage.

The Eagles scored four runs in the first three innings, coming off a Sarah Stromwall double and singles from Kasey Hormel and Ashley Spadt. Spadt had a great first game, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Biola's other two runs of the 6-0 game one victory came in their last at bats in the bottom of the sixth. After two quick outs to start the inning, the Eagles got a runner on as Brooke Madrid reached on an error. Then back-to-back-to-back singles brought home the two runs, with Selina Sherlin and Hormel getting RBI. Sherlin got a great start to what would be a monster day with a 3-for-4 outing including one RBI and one run score in the opener.

Early on game two looked like it would be a runaway game for Biola, but it was anything but as the Eagles took the lead in their last at bats and barely squeaked away with a 9-8 victory.

Bria Madrid was held 0-for-4 in the opener, but she definitely did not repeat that performance in game two, serving as the catalyst she's meant to be for the Eagles' offense. She led-off the game with a double to left field.

Biola would not have a single batter retired until back-to-back fielder's choice plays that came after they took a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Runs came courtesy a CSUSM error, a Heather Hall double and a two-run homerun by Selina Sherlin. The Eagles' batted around their entire order in the first inning.

That lead shrunk to just one after the Cougars got three runs off of Kimmy Triolo in the top of the second inning. Terri Van Dagens entered the game in place of Triolo with one out in the inning and retired the rest of the Cougars to avoid any further damage.

A Bria Madrid solo shot, her sixth of the season, increased Biola's lead back to two in the bottom half of the second, bringing the score to 5-3.

Van Dagens stayed under control through the third inning, but she ran into some trouble after striking out the leadoff batter in the fourth. She allowed a single, then struck out another batter before walking Amu intentionally. A hit-by-pitch loaded the bases and turned up the pressure dial so much that an illegal pitch was called and brought a run home to tighten the gap to just one. A timely single tied the game and forced Coleman to go back to her senior ace, DePriest.

DePriest allowed a two-run, two-out triple to Olivia Lucatuorto to give CSUSM its first lead of the afternoon at 7-5. That lead was extended with an unearned run in the top of the sixth, leaving Biola with three runs to make up and just six outs left to do it.

The Cougars brought back in the game one loser, Ashley Dagenais, and aside from allowing one run in the second Dagenais was having her way with the Eagles' offense in the second game.

That all changed in the bottom of the sixth as Biola used its extremely productive top of the order to regain the lead for DePriest. The Eagles scored four runs on two hits and an error to charge back from behind. The scoring plays came courtesy of a Brooke Madrid double, a CSUSM throwing error and a Sherlin single.

Biola's one through four hitters combined to go 8-for-14 with six RBI and eight runs scored to key this 9-8 victory.

DePriest finished off the Cougars in the top of the 7th, allowing a runner into scoring position, but fittingly winning the battle with Amu, getting her to fly out to end the game.

"We knew their pitching staff would be tired by the end of the second game," said Coleman. "So we knew if we were patient, kept ourselves fresh, and if Reba came into close we could pull out a sweep."

The Eagles improved to 26-10 with the doubleheader sweep and they caused CSU San Marcos to fall to 22-9 overall. Biola is back in battle on April 2 at Azusa Pacific. Games are at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
