FULLERTON, Calif. --- Biola men and women's tennis completed its season sweep of Hope International on Tuesday, highlighted by the men taking their second 9-0 win in a row to improve to 9-8 on the season.
The women got their second conference win of the season, both over HIU, with an 8-1 victory. The only match lost in this one came in a tightly contested third doubles match that went to a tiebreaker.
Â
Biola played well throughout doubles, getting 8-5 and 8-3 victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 matchups.
Kathryn Ashford and
Susan Carmichael won their first doubles match together since Feb. 17 at the No. 2 spot and
Madeline Heer and
Kelsey Post won their second in third matches.
Â
"Kat and Susan worked extremely well together, hitting to a spot just out of reach of their opponents," said Head Coach
Dee Henry. "Mady and Kelsey took turns pulling their opponents out wide and the partner closed it out."
Â
Singles play saw a perfect outing for the Eagles, winning all six matches for the first time this season.
Â
Post rebounded at the No. 4 singles position after being the Eagles' lone loss in the last time out against the Royals. She lost in a super tiebreaker in that match, but rebounded to defeat Alyssa Pritchett in straight sets (6-4; 6-3) in this one.
Â
Biola got decisive straight-set victories in all six matches, highlighted by 6-1; 6-0 victories by Heer at No. 2 and
Brooke Sanford and No. 5.
Â
"Our singles players all played well," said Henry. "They recognized when they had the opportunity to attack and calmly took the authority and finished off the points."
The Eagles improved to 3-11 (2-6 GSAC) and dropped HIU to 0-10 (0-9 GSAC).
Â
The men's team posted its third 9-0 victory of the season in an impressive performance against a truncated HIU team. There was no sixth singles match or second doubles match due to a shortage of players on the Royals' lineup.
Â
When the teams were in play, Biola controlled the match from start to finish in singles and gutted out some close victories in doubles, winning both of the matches played by a 8-6 tally.
Â
"Everyone again played great today," said Head Coach
Brent Worthington. "I'm extremely proud of our team. We are focused on continuing this good run of ours and trying to finish this part of our season well."
Â
The Eagles have won six of its last eight matches to progress from a 3-6 record to its current 9-8 mark. This run has been sparked by improved doubles play and five players winning at least five of their last 10 singles matches.
Â
Philip Westwood and
Brandon Chang continued to lead the charge, as Westwood used a 6-3; 6-0 victory to claim his ninth straight win and Chang won 10-5 in a super breaker to win his fifth straight.
Â
The Eagles win their second straight to move to 9-8 (4-4 GSAC) and the Royals fall to 0-12 (0-9 GSAC).
Biola hosts Pacific Lutheran at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning to conclude its stretch of six games in a week. They pick it right up again on Saturday at home against San Diego Christian.
