Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The breeze must've been blowing heavy out to left field only in the bottom half of the innings on Friday afternoon at Eagles Diamond, as Biola uses three solo homeruns to help blast past No. 6 The Master's College, 4-2.
Â
Two of those big flies came off the bat of
Andres Rodriguez, who was inserted back into the lineup today after getting a day off on Tuesday. Rodriguez powered balls over the left-field wall in the fifth and seventh innings to make the ultimate difference in this two-run ballgame.
Â
Rodriguez's big bopping came in support of another fantastic performance on the mound by
Garrett Picha. Picha outdueled one of the better aces in the conference, Jason Karkenny, going eight innings and allowing just two earned runs to a stacked Mustangs offense.
Â
The difference was Picha's ability to draw contact from The Master's College that was primarily on the ground or a line drive. He retired 11 via groundout, two via strikeout and a handful of lineouts and flyouts. Karkenny on the other hand was getting a lot of balls hit in the air and trying to strike batters out, leaving him exposed to the big fly.
"Garrett's start has got to stick out to you," said Head Coach
Jay Sullenger. "It was a gutty performance by Garrett. He was in control the entire game. If he didn't run out of pitches, in terms of the number he threw, he would have finished that game."
Â
Picha had a sound defense behind him throughout the game, getting two diving catches by
Paul Slater in right field, a few back-handed snags by
Julian Jarrard at shortstop and some sizzling throws from Rodriguez at third base to continually set down the impatient Mustangs hitters.
Â
Jarrard was the one who provided the power for the other of Biola's three homeruns on the afternoon. His solo shot came in the fourth inning to give the Eagles what was a 2-1 lead at the time.
Â
That shot ignited a sense of swagger in Biola's lineup and dugout, getting the underdog in a position to upset the highly-ranked The Master's College team.
Â
"There was a presence overall with the team today that was really fun to see," said Sullenger. "Teams feed off of each other, and these guys came together as a team today like I haven't seen them play together before. They had an expectation about them today against one of the better teams in the nation."
Â
The Rodriguez blasts had Biola up 4-1 in the eighth when TMC loaded the bases against Picha, but the Biola ace worked his way out of it, surrendering just one more run to the Mustangs.
Â
After a scoreless Biola eighth,
Jimmy Gallarda came in and shut the door in the top of the ninth. He earned his fifth save of the season after a perfect inning of work requiring just seven pitches.
Â
The Eagles improved to 13-17 (10-15 GSAC) with the win and dropped the conference-leading Mustangs to 25-7 (19-6 GSAC). The two sides will go at it again in a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
