LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The bases around Eagles Diamond lie a little flatter than normal on this Tuesday afternoon, because there was seemingly a runner standing on them all day long in Biola's 12-10 victory over Providence Christian College.
Â
The Eagles were immersed in a back-and-forth offensive battle with the Sea Beggars all day long, claiming an 11-8 lead in the fourth inning to take the lead for good in a game that until that point had five ties or lead changes.
To get an idea of just how much offense there was today, there was no scoreless half innings until the top of the fifth and no complete scoreless innings until the seventh.
Â
That was good news to Head Coach
Jay Sullenger, who just spent the weekend watching his team outpitch the Vanguard Lions, but not have the offensive firepower to take more than one of the three games in Costa Mesa.
Â
"Before the game we talked about wanting to swing the sticks a little bit," said Sullenger. "We did that today. Other than their last guy on the mound we did a really good job of that."
Â
The Eagles scored runs in each of their first five offensive innings, including three in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth. That was a great sight, as oming into play today Biola had 15 games when it scored four or fewer runs.
Â
Every batter in Sullenger's starting lineup reached base, including the one pinch hitter he used on the afternoon,
Colin Brecheen. The two teams combined for 37 hits, which is far and away the most hits attained in a game at Eagles Diamond this season. The 22 combined runs is the highest total for a Biola Baseball game since a 17-11 loss at CSU San Marcos on April 8, 2014.
Â
"We did a good job of finding ways to score runs and we ran the bags well today," said Sullenger. "It was a good total team effort."
Â
The Eagles had eight stolen bases in the outing, including three coming from
Andy Smith, who had a whale of a ball game. Smith was 3-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBI. Three of those RBI came off a blast over the fence in left field in the second inning, which knotted the game at 4-4 at that point.
Â
Three other players also scored multiple runs for Biola, including
Andrew Frank (2),
Paul Slater, and
Daniel Rasmussen (2) as a courtesy runner for
Eugene Shin.
Â
Shin had a breakout game for Sullenger, going 4-for-5 with an RBI. He upped his batting average from .167 to .304 with the big day and saw his on-base percentage rise to .385.
Â
"It was certainly good to see Eugene swing well today. He's been continuing to work and took advantage of an opportunity today," said Sullenger.
Â
Rob Groeschell and Slater combined to reach base five times for the Eagles, both upping their team-leading reached-base streaks to 13 games.
Â
Biola utilized seven different pitchers in this marathon of a game, ultimately seeing
Sean Rothfuss gets the win (2-0) after 2.0 innings of work in the middle of the game. As Tuesday games often call for, Sullenger had to use an unconventional setup man-closer combination, but ultimately
Julian Jarrard in the eighth and Groeschell in the ninth got the job done. It was Groeschell's first save of the season.
Â
Biola has now won six of its last eight outings and improved to 12-17 overall, while they dropped the Sea Beggars to 16-11-1. Biola returns to Eagles Diamond on Friday, hoping to keep some of this offense alive against the GSAC-leading No. 6 The Master's College Mustangs.
