Biola's Bats Do Just Enough For A Split At Concordia

Biola shutout the home team in game one for its first win over CUI in four years.

Biola crossed the plate just four times on Saturday, but it was enough to win one and nearly win another.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola earned its first victory over No. 8 Concordia since April 16, 2011 with a 2-0 dominant performance in the opener, and it was one out away from winning its second, but ultimately lost game two in the 10th inning to split with the Eagles of Irvine and create a three-way tie atop the Golden State Athletic Conference.

The opener was all about the sheer dominance of Reba DePriest and Kimmy Triolo. DePriest started the game and went three innings, before Triolo relieved her in the fourth inning and held CUI scoreless over her four innings of one-hit work to finish off the shutout.

It was a pitcher's duel all the way through this one, as Biola got just two hits of CUI's hurler, Brittani McGue, but those two hits resulted in two seventh-inning runs that secured the two-run victory.

Concordia did not manage to get their first hit of the ballgame until the very last pitch of the sixth inning. CUI got a single to left field, but the inning ended when they sent a runner home and Anjie Amezquita and Bria Madrid connected to make the out at the plate.

Things unraveled for McGue in the next inning, as she walked three batters, she walked eight total in the opener, and hit another to load the bases and bring home the two runs for the visiting Eagles.

Game two was looking like another one where Biola would get away with scoring just two runs and winning it. BU notched one in a second inning that saw both teams score one run, but then another big-time Kasey Hormel double, her sixth of the season, brought home Kimmy Triolo in the top of the seventh.

That gave Triolo a one-run lead with just three outs to get as she sought to record her second victory of the day.

She allowed a single to start the inning, and that runner reached second base on a sacrifice bunt as Biola got one out. Then, a batter flied out to put the Eagles one out away from a sweep of the doubleheader.

A booted ball allowed the next batter to reach base and the runner at second to score and the game was forced to go into extra innings with the international tiebreaker rules in effect.

The ninth inning was Biola's best chance in the three extra frames that would be played, getting a runner gunned down at home plate for the first out of the inning and then getting another runner to third with still just one out. Two outs in succession from the heart of the Eagles' lineup put an end to that threat.

Good thing was that Triolo was zipping right through CUI's lineup through the first two extra innings, facing just the minimum six batters and not allowing a hit.

While Biola got four hits in the three extra frames and it resulted in zero runs, the first hit Triolo surrendered, coming in the bottom of the 10th, was enough for Concordia to push across the heart-wrenching winning run and force the doubleheader split.

Biola becomes 20-8 (7-3 GSAC) after the day and CUI moves to 24-4 (7-3 GSAC). The two teams are tied with Vanguard for first place in the conference. Biola and Concordia split, CUI and Vanguard split and BU lost both to Vanguard in the head-to-head matchups so far.
