LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola went into Friday afternoon's match with University of Rochester looking for its third win in a row, but despite getting wins at the top two singles spots fell short, 3-6.
Â
Outside of the top two singles spots, singles was a struggle for the Eagles, dropping the other four matches and not playing their opponents particularly close.
Â
David Garcia and
Brandon Chang both lost in straight sets, but the two Eagles played long matches before their opponents walked away with the victory.
Â
"In singles we struggled in most spots," said Head Coach
Brent Worthington. "David and Brandon lost, but they fought really hard and made their matches last a long time."
Â
Tayven Townsend dropped his first set 1-6 before winning the second set via tiebreak 7-6 and then winning the super breaker to win his second straight at No. 1. This two-game winning streak keeps him rolling in the right direction after a seven-match losing streak.
Â
Philip Westwood had an easier go at it, winning in straight sets to pick up his fourth win in a row. He defeated his opponent 6-2; 7-5 to improve to 7-5 on the season and 3-1 at the No. 2 spot.
Â
"Philip continues to keep rolling, finding ways to win in straight sets," said Worthington.
Â
Double saw the Eagles play some of their best tennis of the season. Each of the three doubles pairings remained in contention late into the doubles matches, but only
Tayven Townsend and
Brandon Chang were able to get a win, taking out Rochester's top doubles pairings, 8-6.
Â
"This was the most competitive doubles we've had at all three spots in one match," said Worthington. Â "Unfortunately we were only able to pick up a win at the No. 1 spot, but overall the doubles were high tennis and great competition."
Â
Biola falls to 5-7 overall and the University of Rochester improves to 4-6 on the season. The Eagles continue their season slate on Thursday at home against Colorado Christian.
