SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Caught in a bit of a losing-streak rut, men's tennis lost its fifth-straight match on Saturday. The Eagles fell on the road to No. 9 Westmont, 2-7.
Â
The 3-5 Eagles, who dropped early singles and doubles matches as the Warriors cruised on to the victory, now find themselves sitting fifth in the GSAC standings, a game and a half back of Concordia.
Â
"We competed well in most spots," said Head Coach
Brent Worthington. "Westmont is a top-10 team and to get two points is a positive and something we can take with us into this next month."
Â
In singles play, the Eagles picked up just one victory; a three set win from freshman
David Garcia in the sixth position. Garcia battled back from a 6-1 first set loss to snag wins in the second and third, 6-3 and 6-2, respectively.
Â
Freshman
Philip Westwood had the best chance at forcing a third set, as Westmont swept the rest of the singles matches in two sets, but fell 6-2, 7-5 in a second set tiebreak.
Â
On the doubles side, Westwood and sophomore
Luke Mountain grinded out an 8-2 win in the two slot.
Â
"Phillip and Luke played their best doubles set of the year," Worthington said.
Â
In the end, the victories were too little too late for the Eagles, as Biola's singles and doubles wins both finished last in start time on their respective events.
Â
Worthington and the Eagles now turn their attention to March and the 13 matches that will take place throughout the month. Biola kicks things off this coming Tuesday afternoon at home against Christopher Newport University. The Captains are 4-1 on the year and are currently riding a three game win streak.
