LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis begins its 2015 Golden State Athletic Conference season with a victory, defeating Arizona Christian 7-2 at the Biola Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
Â
In the same way they won their season-opener on Thursday, the Eagles went 2-1 in doubles and 5-1 in singles to secure the victory and improve to 2-0 (1-0 GSAC) on the season. The loss comes in ACU's very first match of the year, making the Firestorm 0-1 (0-1 GSAC).
Â
"It was another great team win as we only dropped one point in each singles and doubles," said Head Coach
Brent Worthington. "The match was competitive across the board, but our team showed great toughness in pulling out numerous close wins."
Â
One of those close wins came at No. 1 doubles, where
Tayven Townsend and
Brandon Chang combined for a 8-6 victory in the last match to finish, cementing the 7-2 victory.
Townsend was the one to secure the match victory for the team, as he gutted his way through a three-setter at No. 1 singles, which also included a first set that went to tiebreak. Townsend defeated Santiago Galeffi 7-6(7-4); 2-6, 6-4 to seal the match before doubles were even played.
Â
Chang also had a good singles outing, as he defeated Michael Munguia in straight sets (6-1; 6-2) in the third singles match to finish.
Â
Freshmen
Joe Turnquist and
David Garcia sped right through their opponents in two two-set wins, serving as the first two matches to finish in this one. This duo combines for a 4-0 record in singles through the first two matches of their careers.
Â
"Joe and David got us our first two points again by winning their singles matches," said Worthington. "We've always had close matches against ACU, so to win 7-2 showed a lot about this team."
Â
Biola's other singles win came from
Luke Mountain, who picked up a three-set win at No. 4 and also combined with
Philip Westwood to get Biola's first of the two doubles wins.
Â
Biola completes its string of back-to-back-to-back matches tomorrow afternoon at Cal Tech. The Eagles and Beavers begin play at 3:00 p.m.
