Box Score PHOENIX, Calif. --- After appearing to get back to their winning ways in their last game, Biola winds up back in the loss column, falling at Arizona Christian 57-52.
Elizabeth Munger,
Aubree Mittel and
Chelsea Hill all score double-digits, but the offense, as a whole, hit just 29.9 percent from the field.
Â
With 21 seconds left in the game, the Eagles trailed by three as Arizona Christian took the ball out under their own basket.
Annie Park jumped in front of the ensuing inbounds pass, and after a wild, floor-bound scramble, recovered the ball and sent it to
Amanda Darouie for an open look to tie from the corner. Like it did 47 other times in this one, the shot did not fall. However like it did 16 times, Biola grabbed the offensive rebound, breathing life back into the Eagles' comeback for about three seconds. The Firestorm's Alyssa Gruber read the coming pass and snatched it and the Eagles' comeback hopes away.
Â
While that sequence may seem like the most direct cause of the loss, the team was out of sync throughout the game in this one. Not only did could they connect on just 20 of 67 shots, the Eagles allowed their opponents to score on 48 percent, including three nearly consecutive, wide-open layups with under three minutes left in the game. The anemic offense remains the giant, immovable obstacle in Biola's recent attempts to climb back up the Golden State Athletic Conference standings, undercutting the rebounding, bench play and free throw advantages for the Eagles in this one.
Â
With offense at such a premium, the team has to hope
Aubree Mittel's performace tonight is a breakout game in a down season for her. She tied for a game-high 14 points, which is the most for her in a game since Dec. 9 and a relief for her after going scoreless in each of the last two contests.
Â
With six games left in the schedule, Biola can still make up plenty of ground in the GSAC, but with Arizona Christian representing a big chunk of an easy portion of the Eagles' schedule, Biola will need to really click down the stretch. They get their next chance Saturday when they head to San Diego Christian.
