We Have Lift Off

Five total homeruns power the No. 14 Eagles past Arizona Christian in a 2-0 sweep.

With 20 total hits, the bats got plenty of use in the doubleheader
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN DIEGO, CALIF. --- Clutch hitting was the recurring theme for No. 14 Biola, leading to two convincing victories against Golden State Athletic Conference opponent Arizona Christian. The 5-0 and 10-7 posts in the win column were just the reinvigoration Head Coach Lorie Coleman's squad needed after stumbling out the gate in conference play.

These two wins bring the Eagles' GSAC record back to .500, but perhaps the victories are more important because they show the team what they are capable of when firing on all cylinders. Which brings us to Reba DePriest, who did everything in the circle in game one and delivered her best performance this season.

DePriest pitched a complete game shutout while striking out 14 in the 5-0 win to improve her record to 8-2. She had at least two strikeouts in five of the seven innings, with ACU scattering just two hits and getting just one runner past second base.

A Heather Hall homerun in the top of the fourth was all the Eagles would need in game one, but Bria Madrid, Anjie Amezquita and Selina Sherlin would add five more hits and help Biola take a vice grip on a game that was 1-0 headed to the sixth inning. The two runs in the sixth came on a double from Bria, followed by an error on a ball put in play by Brooke Madrid, and a RBI single by Sherlin.

The two in the seventh came on Bria Madrid's fifth homerun of the season, and third in the last two days, and certainly put the game out of reach with the authority DePriest had in the circle. The deep shot was a sign of things to come for the Eagles because three more homeruns came in game two, and Biola needed each one of them. The blasts from Kendall Maddox and Kasey Hormel were directly responsible for the five-run seventh inning that gave Biola a 10-7 come-from-behind victory.

The bats came out rolling for Biola in game two and all indicators pointed to a rout after back-to-back RBI hits from Hall and Sherlin scored the Madrid sisters. However, the Firestorm figured out the enigma in the circle that smothered it in game one. ACU hitters forced Terri Van Dagens to exit after a third of an inning and scored in each of their first three offensive frames for a total of five runs.

ACU even got to DePriest, who gave up two runs in the bottom of the fifth, breaking the 5-5 tie with back-to-back homeruns from Abby Beasley and Alyssa Vanderdrink. The Firestorm hit four solo shots in game two, with two coming from Vanderdrink, who had no homeruns before Saturday.

After the Eagles were retired in order in the sixth they roared back in the their last ups when they turned the power switch back on. After replacing Iliana Morales in the batting order, Maddox came to the plate with her team down 7-5, two runners on and one out. After taking a ball, Maddox caused an explosion in the Biola dugout when she cleared the bases and gave the Eagles an 8-7 lead.

Hormel wasn't content with that one-run margin. When the sophomore's place in the order was called three batters later, she put a charge into a 1-2 pitch with a runner on and joined the tater parade while giving Kimmy Triolo all the cushion she needed to earn her second victory of the season.

The Eagles are now 14-6 (2-2 GSAC) and ACU loses these first to GSAC games to drop to 3-3 (0-2 GSAC). With another doubleheader scheduled for Monday, Biola has a quick turnaround after the trip home. The Eagles welcome the Southern Oregon Raiders to Freedom Field at 1:00 p.m.
