LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Tennis hosted the class of the Golden State Athletic Conference on Tuesday for a men and women's doubleheader against Concordia.
Â
The same day that Biola's men's squad broke into the conversation for the NAIA Top-25 Coaches' Poll (receiving votes), it had to face off with the No. 11 Concordia side, and it did not go well, with the men losing 0-9.
Â
The women's side had a little bit more success, also going up against a ranked side, as CUI's women's program is currently at No. 13 in the nation.
Dee Henry's squad got two points off of the visiting Eagles, losing 2-7 at home.
Â
"This was the best all-around team we've played this season and our ladies played them quite well," said Henry.
Â
Katherine Ashford and
Susan Carmichael brought their conference record in doubles to an even 2-2 following an 8-5 victory over Katherine Jensen and Caitlyn Uzzi in the No. 2 match.
Â
Jensen and Uzzi were 1-1 coming into that match and were fresh off an 8-6 win over a Hope International pairing last week. Ashford and Carmichael outmatched them throughout the play, placing well-grounded strokes and volleys to stretch out their opponents and gain the advantage.
Â
The Eagles' other point came at No. 5 singles, where freshman
Brooke Sanford improved to 2-2 in conference play and rebounded after a loss at San Diego Christian with a 6-4; 6-2 victory over Jensen in one that was never really in doubt.
Â
"Brooke used her solid ground strokes patiently and played high percentage tennis," said Henry.
Â
Unfortunately no one on the men's side played high enough percentage tennis to get a win as the Eagles lost 0-9 for the first, and hopefully last, time in the 2015 season.
Â
"We competed better as a team across the board, but no one was able to pick up a win," said Head Coach
Brent Worthington. "I was really proud of Phillip, who lost a long first set and then fought through a second set and showed how tough he is."
Â
Phillip Westwood came the closest of any Eagle to forcing three sets in his singles match, forcing a tiebreak in set one after getting the match to 6-6. He fell short in that tiebreak before losing set two 3-6 and going down just like the rest of his teammates.
Â
Biola has not taken a match from Concordia since Feb. 16, 2013 (five matches ago), when it was able to win one doubles match in a 1-8 loss. Needless to say, Concordia is just about the highest level of competition the Eagles will face.
Â
Biola will look to rebound this week as it hosts Vanguard at 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon at the Biola Tennis Center. Vanguard's teams are also both ranked, with the men coming in at No. 4 and the women No. 15.
