EL CAJON, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis suffered its first setback of the 2015 campaign with a 3-6 road loss to No. 24 San Diego Christian.
Â
The Hawks are the first nationally-ranked side that Head Coach
Brent Worthington's squad has seen this year, and it was good experience for a young Eagles team that will have plenty more matchups with ranked opponents over the rest of Golden State Athletic Conference play.
Â
"The spots we were competitive in we won, but we just weren't competitive at enough spots in the lineup," said Worthington. "It was good experience for us to see the level of tennis we need to play to compete with and beat a nationally-ranked opponent."
Â
Philip Westwood and
Luke Mountain played that style of tennis in their 8-2 drubbing of SDC's No. 2 doubles team. It is the pairing's second win in a row and brings their record to 2-1 in doubles this season.
Â
"Philip and Luke played amazing doubles and dominated their set," said Worthington.
Â
After their win, Biola trailed 1-2 heading into singles play, where it was able to pick up just two of the four points it needed to get a win.
Â
Westwood continued his strong day with a straight-set victory at No. 3 singles, defeating his opponent 6-1; 6-3.
Joe Turnquist got Biola's other singles victory, winning a second-set tiebreak to get a two-set (6-3; 7-6(7-2)) victory in the very last match to finish on this Saturday afternoon.
Â
"Joe played well and  fought off a close second set to remain the only undefeated singles player for this year," said Worthington.
The Eagles fall to 3-1 (2-1 GSAC), while San Diego Christian improves to 4-1 (2-1 GSAC). Biola next hits the courts at home on Tuesday, hosting No. 11 Concordia (4-2, 2-2 GSAC).
