Box Score EL CAJON, Calif. --- As time expired in Biola Women's Basketball's first Golden State Athletic Conference game of the season it was a familiar face that came up with the clutch shot that keyed a one-point buzzer-beater victory for the Eagles.
Â
After
Sara Dougan came down with a huge defensive rebound on the other end
DeMoria White was fed the ball and sinked a jumper to push Biola to its 53-52 victory over San Diego Christian in a wild one on Saturday night.
Â
It was a difficult night for the Eagles through the first three quarters as a slow start from the field set the team back by 8-12 points for most of the game. A huge third quarter run is what got the Eagles back into it as San Diego Christian went six minutes without scoring down the stretch to allow the Eagles back into it.
Â
Biola faced a two-point deficit heading into the final quarter where the game was tied or the lead changed five different times as it headed into the final minute of play.
Â
Turnovers and missed opportunities cost the Hawks down the stretch as they went the final 2:39 without a point and only grabbed one rebound during that stretch.
Â
Dougan was critical during this final two and a half minutes as she grabbed a rebound, got a block, posted an assist and dropped in a layup as she demonstrated maturity well beyond her years.
Â
Then it was White who scored the game-winner to get her 18
th and 19
th points of the night. She was consistent throughout the evening as she went 8-for-14 from the floor in the most efficient shooting performance of all the Eagles.
Â
The second half was a completely different story from the first as the Eagles saw their field goal percentage skyrocket from 27 percent to 46. SDC had an opposite story as its field goal percentage went down.
Â
More importantly the Hawks committed a bunch of turnovers to help BU get 11 more shots off than SDC creating more opportunities for scoring. Biola outscored SDC 33-23 over the final 20 minutes.
Â
Dougan and
Danielle Kennedy joined White in double-digit scoring as they dropped in10 points each. Natalie Perales was the only Hawk to get to double-digits in a strong individual performance where she finished with 16.
Â
So Biola improves to 6-3 (1-0 GSAC) while San Diego Christian falls to 5-3 (0-1 GSAC). The Eagles are back on the court at home on Wednesday night against Bethesda.
