Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a total team performance on Saturday night that got the job done for Head Coach
Alan Nakamura's women's basketball team in an 81-43 win over La Sierra.
The Eagles took control of the game from the outset by storming out to a commanding 19-0 lead before La Sierra hit its first shot from the field with just over a minute left in the first quarter. That Hannah Asencio three was the only field goal hit by the Golden Eagles in a first half that saw them shoot 5 percent.
Biola went 7-for-16 from the floor in that same first quarter to build its insurmountable advantage. Four of those field goals were from beyond the arc, which was the signature of the Eagles' offense from start-to-finish on a night when the team drained 14 three-point shots.
Following the first quarter Biola would add five, six and 11 points to its lead in each of the following frames as it worked to the final score that saw it nearly double the scoring output of the La Sierra team.
Those three-point makes were a large part of the equation as the Eagles' 14 threes were just four shy of the total number of field goals hit by LSU.
Aubree Mittel was an astonishing 5-for-8 from deep as she went through stretches where she just could not miss.
DeMoria White also had a strong night shooting. She was 8-for-16 overall and 4-from-8 from deep to lead Biola with 21 points.
Former Eagle,
Chelsie Baham, was the leading scorer for the visiting team as she ended the night with 14 points and accounted for one-third of LSU's made baskets on a 6-for-19 shooting performance.
Biola was once again moving the ball well, which helped six different players rack up at least seven points. The Eagles combined for 22 assists with the majority coming from White (5) and
Brenna Khaw (4).
A bright spot for Nakamura was
Tina Esbenshade. The first-year senior got her first 17 minutes of the season and grabbed five points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal.
The Eagles also played much bigger than the Golden Eagles. Biola led the rebounding battle by double digits and it outscored LSU in the paint 34-18.
Emma Newman played a key role in that advantage as the freshman ended with eight points and five rebounds. She and
Sara Dougan combined to go 6-for-7 from the field in two impressive performances.
The 38-point victory helped the Eagles move to 2-1 on the season at the end of the second week of play. La Sierra fell to 0-2 after coming into this game with a loss at San Diego Christian.
Biola's teams will be recognized at Sunday evening's Midnight Madness and then will return to the court on Tuesday night for a game at La Sierra.
