Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After taking a huge leap forward with a win over Montana Tech just a few days ago Biola Women's Basketball inches back just a bit with Tuesday night's 51-61 defeat at the hands of Cal Poly Pomona.
Â
The Eagle fought valiantly from start to finish, but just simply could not get the ball in the basket with the kind of efficiency needed to win on this night. The team shot just 28 percent from the floor and 24 percent from deep as it allowed the Broncos their first victory of the season (1-4)
Â
The first two quarters saw high points and low points for each team, but the biggest dagger came when the Broncos' Jordyn Shane hit a buzzer-beater three to extend the Broncos' lead to 28-21 heading into the halftime break. The game was tied at 19 with 1:44 remaining until the break, but the Broncos made four free throws and two easy buckets to build a lead they'd never relinquished
Â
That lead came as Biola's offense slowed way down in the second quarter after a competive first 10 minutes. The Eagles led 13-10 after the first quarter, but the team was only able to make three shots from the floor in the second quarter in falling behind.
Â
One of those three makes came from
Sara Dougan who began the game hot and led the team in scoring at halftime with her seven points. She was 2-of-4 from the floor as one source of consistency for this young team. The three-point shot was especially challenging for the Eagles as they made just two shots from deep through the first 20 minutes.
Â
Late three point makes were a theme for the Broncos as Erin Hagen made one with just over 10 seconds left in the third quarter in pushing the Cal Poly lead to 44-27 heading into the final frame.
Â
The fourth quarter was actually the kindest for Biola as the team ended strong with 24 points in the frame. The team slowly, but surely, cut into the lead throughout the quarter as the Broncos watched their once impenetrable 19-point lead dwindle down to eight points with about three minutes to play. Â
Â
Biola's defense began to wear down the Broncos' shooters as it held Cal Poly without a point for over three minutes in that final quarter to help it tighten the gap to single digits.
Â
Ultimately the comeback attempt fell 10 points short and it's back to the drawing board for Head Coach
Alan Nakamura as he continues to tinker with his continually maturing roster.
Â
Dougan and
Danielle Kennedy led the team with 10 points each in this one. Dougan and
Taylor Casey led the team with seven rebounds apiece, but the Eagles struggled on the boards as a whole in losing the rebound battle 49-35.
Â
The Broncos had three players in double-digit scoring and had their big rebounding effort paced by Priscilla Brooks, who ended with 17 rebounds.
Â
Biola is back at it on Tuesday Dec. 1, when the team hosts Redlands at 7:30 p.m. in its final preseason game.
