Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a clash between the best offense in the Golden State Athletic Conference and the best defense in the conference as No. 8 Westmont and No. 13 Biola met at Al Barbour Field for the 2015 GSAC Tournament Championship on Saturday evening.
Â
The Warriors came away with a 3-0 victory and clinched the conference's one automatic qualifying berth to the NAIA National Championship Tournament.
Â
The first half seemed to be evenly matched with good opportunities early on for both sides.
Taylor Venegas was the standout for the Eagles as she created multiple chances out of nothing by beating her defender one-on-one to get chances at goal.
Â
When Sam Verduzco subbed in midway through the first half the two played off each other well in order to get even more chances. A lot of the Eagles' play in the offensive third came due to some strong defensive work in the midfield as the Eagles managed to take possession from the Warriors multiple times throughout the half.
Â
Neither team tested the keeper too much throughout the first 45 minutes, but the Warriors managed to be at the right place at the right time twice late in the half.
Â
Jackie Lopez got on the end of two Westmont set pieces and converted two goals about a minute a part to take a 2-0 lead in the match with just eight minutes left in the half and dishearten the No. 1-seeded Biola fans. Biola actually was the more active offense in the first half as it had more shots than the Westmont side despite the lopsided score line.
Â
Aside from those two successful chances off set pieces the Eagles' back line was lockdown throughout the night with
Kayla White and
Brianna Mikalson securing the flanks and
Madyson Brown and
Cat Newberry working well together in the middle.
Â
Westmont had its first real chance to extend the lead to three with just under 28 minutes left in the second half. The Warriors' Grace Lemley lined up a shot from just outside the top right corner of the box but hit the crossbar.
Â
Afterward Westmont continued to keep the pressure turned to high as they threatened for more for another few minutes. They had another two back-to-back chances at the 15-minute mark in the second half, but both chances sailed just inches high.
Â
Newberry did well to stymie a chance for GSAC Player of the Year Kelsey Steck in the 77
thminute. She won the foot race with Westmont's speedster to get a clearance back to Biola's keeper
Marina Rodriguez. After this Biola's offense began to press even harder at goal as the team never gave up hope of overcoming the 2-0 lead.
Â
The final good opportunity of that game for Biola came with just over three minutes left in the half as
McKenna Marmelstein swung a free kick toward goal, but it sailed wide on the left side.
Westmont took advantage of having numbers in the offensive end and tacked on a third goal in the 87
th minute when Steck found Hailey Parzonko with a post-to-post pass to extend the lead late.
Â
All in all it was a solid effort on defense boosted by occasional flashes in the offensive end that just never materialized for the Eagles.
Â
The Warriors had two chances and took advantage of both of them to make the difference in them claiming the GSAC Tournament title.
Â
Biola drops to 14-3-3 for the season, while the Warriors improved to 14-3-2. The Eagles will find out their national tournament fate when the selections are released on Monday.
