WHITE'S GAME WINNING GOAL

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- Kayla White may be a defender, but the way she's up and down the field nonstop every single match it can be hard to tell. The junior found the back of the net for the second time this season on Saturday to hand Biola a 1-0 win over The Master's College to spoil the Mustangs' senior day.

"The game was a pretty well fought battle from both sides," said Head Coach Erin Brunelle. "The Master's had their typical high-pressure approach with a lot of numbers around the ball. They made it difficult for us to combine and connect, but we were able to break them down at times to get forward into the attack."

One of those times the Eagles were able to get forward in the attack was when White was able to turn a bad service into a great chance at goal and win the game with fewer than two minutes left on the clock.

She won the ball high up the field and tried to turn into the box and setup one of the Eagles' forwards, but when that was blocked it got deflected back to her and she emphatically struck it to the far side where it hit the post and caromed back into the goal.

After that the Eagles needed to hold on to the lead for just one minute and 23 seconds in order to assure their sixth Golden State Athletic Conference victory of the season.

"We asked a lot from our forwards to help us defensively today," said Brunelle. "They did a great job of getting numbers around the ball and making sure players were accounted for. We got some notable performances from Taylor Venegas, Jessie Burns and Brittney Sayre to free up our midfielders."

So it was a complete team effort that blanked the Mustangs and helped Biola climb to three points ahead of No. 5 Westmont to sit atop the conference standings.

While TMC outshot the Eagles 11-9 Biola's defenders held the Mustangs to just four shots on goal over the course of the 90 minutes. Three of those four came in the second half as the Mustangs ramped up the pressure.

Both teams entered play on Saturday with strong second half numbers throughout the season. Biola came into the day outscoring opponents 23-5 in the second period. The Master's had an advantage of 12-10 in the second frame of games.

It was Biola's patient offensive approach that paid off and earned them the victory in this one.

"Something we've been trying to work on is not just shooting for the sake of shooting, but rather to combine more in and around the attacking third," said Brunelle.

The Eagles did well with that this afternoon as more than half of the shots Biola took went on target.

There is just one game left on Biola's 2015 regular season schedule. The Eagles will take their 12-2-3 (6-1-2 GSAC) record to Phoenix next Saturday as they end the year with Arizona Christian.

"We are excited to move forward," said Brunelle. "We are one win away from claiming at least a second place finish from conference."

A Biola win against Arizona Christian would actually clinch at least a share of the GSAC title as they've got a three-point advantage over Westmont and the Warriors have just two matches to play.
